again, hip hop is deeply rooted in black culture. its a way for black people in particular to express themselves. sure, white rappers are in there and i dont really have an opinion on that but to only really enjoy white rappers or to say that white people do this genre that was made by and for black people and PoC is a bad look.

I never said or gave the notion that I only enjoy white rappers, only that I enjoy one group over most I've heard. So how again is this twisted to be racist? Not singling you out at all, you seem to be the only clear headed one willing to talk rationally.

Why do you even like the lonely island more than what they're parodying? They're faithful enough to the styles they tackle that you should like what they're pulling from. Unless you think they're making fun of rappers and rap, in which case you're deeply missing the point because they're avid fans of the genre themselves

    hmmm

What Davjs said is probably not the best look but I don't think it strictly needs any further justification.

going with what @sophos34 said above, why is it that you like Lonely Island and their parodying style and not the actual music they parody? theyre very close to it sonically, the only difference is most hip hop is a little more lyrical and deals with other issues (although not all hip hop of course but roll with me) especially social and political. Plus a lot of hip hop is just FUN, slick rhymes over well made beats thats just a joy to listen to. LI is a parody group, but the sheer fact that theyre parodying something that was intended to be an expression platform for a marginalized group is a big issue and saying that theyre youre favorite group over most others is pretty dismissive of the genre being parodied.

  8. @Davjs you gave an unpopular music opinion. you win the thread, i guess.

Well his question doesn't really answer my question, but I never said they were my all time favorite (that goes to Public Enemy) but yes I do think that TLI makes awesome music and if they took out the comedy and wrote serious lyrics instead I think their songs would be amazing. I really shouldn't have to write an essay on why I like something lol.

I just hate this culture of jumping down people's throats. It's completely clear I didn't mean anything remotely racist or negative towards a whole race of people, or even to a genre. Everyone is allowed to feel how they feel though, it doesn't bother me.

I started typing a response to his post but decided it's not even worth it. I'm also aware I skipped the whole disussion right now and I'm glad I did, haha.

im just banging my head against a brick wall so ill just stop. hopefully my posts were articulate and informative and if not please call me out if i missed something.

this whole "outrage culture is so dumb!!!!" mentality is super dismissive and its clear most people that believe that are really saying "im not open to change my views or rectify my obtuse or problematic beliefs" which is beyond frustrating

  17. first of all "***" on "holiday" isn't problematic because it is clearly in character

second, imagine being a person who likes public enemy and also being a person who thinks the lonely island is better than most rap

  24. Same here! It's been at least 10 years for me. I even watched the documentary that came out recently about it thinking it might interest me in listening to the album again, but nope. I watched the doc and moved on immediately.

It's not just a "music opinion," it is at best only tangentially related to music
