Nothing better than writing off a whole genre that comes from black culture and saying white people do it better, am I right?

Is hip hop not inherently rooted in black culture?

 

Hip hop is inherently tied to black people and is an art form that they created and use to express themselves, their frustrations, their culture, their thoughts, etc. I'm not saying you have to love all hip hop or anything but dismissing the entire genre comes across poorly without a more articulate explanation

 

If the Foo Fighters ended after 3 albums like Nirvana, I'd agree but Foos had time on their side to become so great over time and released the amazing Echoes Silence Patience & Grace and Wasting Light. Kind of hard to compare because who knows what Nirvana would be releasing today.

 

Feels like this whole AI thing is coming to a close but I just wanted to say that I was also like 14 when it came out and still don't think it's a great album. Age has nothing to do with it!

ok "newer" rap is a new qualifier that you added. that makes it a liiiiiittle better but its still kind of dismissive imo. but you have your mind set and im not going to argue with ya

 

I agree. American Idiot came out when I was a senior in high school. I already was very familiar with Green Day, but kinda cooled on them once Warning came out. But everyone was like "AMERICAN IDIOT IS THE BEST THING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!" so I went over to Best Buy and bought a copy to see what the hubbub was all about, and it just never hit me the way that it did my friends/peers. Of course there were songs on it that I liked, but yeah, I didn't see what the big deal was. It also didn't help that it was a political concept album. Politics were the last thing on my mind then so I didn't care at all. I just wanted to listen to The Ataris and Blink 182 and songs about girls, haha.

 

its not "race bait" for us to inquire why youre dismissing a genre that was created by PoC. Its not "outrage culture" for us to ask you to extrapolate on your views and try to possibly educate as to WHY what you said can be seen as dismissive and a little side-eye worthy

 

Yeah I went back and re read my post, I didn't say newer. Even still, saying I like one group more in a genre is bad because? They are white? They are a comedy group? How is it different from saying "I think Eminem is better than most rap"? I'm sure there are many people out there who think that.

 

"Newer rap" makes it worse imo what does that even mean you don't like any rap that's new which includes a huge amount of different styles and artists, nah you like the white guys parodying a predominately black genre. Great look
