1989 is her only album I've heard in full, I have mixed feelings about her and Katy Perry

 

Ugh. "Guilty pleasures". Trying not to wind up my well-rehearsed rant.

 

While I do hate the term guilty pleasure, the closest I get to actually having a guilty pleasure is Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend";

It's mean-spirited, nasty, grating, but I do secretly love it. With taylor Swift or CRJ or whoever, I have absolutely no guilt, but I'd be a bit embarrassed if someone caught me listening to this song.

 

I consider the turnover album one of the closest things to a guilty pleasure I have because I think it's bad but I enjoy it a lot

 

I DO think there's a use for the term. There is music I think is bad that I like inexplicably anyway.

But if you use it for music you think you're SUPPOSED to think is bad, but genuinely enjoy...

How can you not love the line " hell yeah I'm the motherfucking princess"

 

1989 doesn't have the highs of her other albums and has lower lows than her other albums except maybe Speak Now has lower lows.

Guilty pleasures are silly but then I get annoyed that certain genres or artists are looked down to even have guilty pleasures. Justin Timberlake is another pop artist ppl tend to make an "exception" for and I feel like it sometimes has sexist undertones too but WHATEVS

Justin Timberlake is a douchebag and not the most talented member of that group anyway, spoiler alert it's JC

 

i like 1989 the most because i think it showcases what she's best at. she's an absolutely ruthless pop polyglot and i think that's the best display of her skill yet. everything she did on that album was something other people had already done but she just really streamlined it and made it better. there may be higher highs elsewhere but i dont know that i think it has the lowest lows, esp considering the early albums. red would probably have a case but it's just too long plus it has "trouble" which is terrible trendchasing shit and probably the nadir of her last two albums.

 

Taylor swift is like a joint everyone passes around and everyone gets high except me haha. I just dont get what puts her head and shoulders above all her peers for most fans.

 

This is also my opinion.

I think initially it was because it's the album that got me into the band but even now I just overall think it's a better album.

 

Crazy how many of the same people lambast pop music et al for having bad lyrics but then praise JT when he has shit like this

JT owes all of his accolades for being a "groundbreaking" pop artist to Timbo

 

I don't imagine there are many people who lambast how bad pop lyrics are, while praising JT's lyrics. That feels like a strawman to me.

 

Yawn. You can find a set of terrible lyrics in practically every single artist's work.

 

I still like Futuresex and parts of the first 20/20 but not much. Suit and Tie is a horrible song.

 

First 20/20 is fantastic, could do with a little edit, but it's mostly awesome. Second 20/20 is a proper dud.

Idk, I know a lotttttttt of people who think their music tastes are above "pop music" but praise JT for being some savior of "real musicianship" in pop. I think broadly speaking, JT gets accolades and praise other pop artists don't receive while also being shielded from criticisms many other pop acts get imo.

 

JT has some classic songs (Cry Me a River is an all timer) but has more misses than hits. A lot of his music suffers from being too bloated for its own good. He's fine.

 

JT is someone whose jerky nature eclipses his lyrics for me. Like when Bieber sings about being wronged and I'm like really now u fool. So hearing JT singing songs about crying rivers or what goes around comes around I'm like REALLY?? YOU??

 

JT still the worst for how he handled the fallout from the Superbowl and didn't really stand up for Janet @ all
