Here's a real unpopular opinion for this thread

That's Fact, not opinion, jake

 

I think Jeff being so mysterious plays a lot into NMH's popularity

 

Elliott Smith over Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Cat Stevens as the ultimate singer-songwriter. (if you value lyrics over music arrangements then i'll give you Cohen and Dylan)

I know Elliott Smith is loved here but I still think his influence (not talked about much, but it's actually heard EVERYWHERE in indie-rock) and constantly brilliant sense of harmonies and chord changes is still understated. In my personal life I really do not meet people who know who Elliott Smith is and that's criminal to me, I don't know how he's not up there with Kurt Cobain as a classic of the modern era.

they call his fanbase a "cult following" but that almost seems too specific, it's not like he was in some corner of music doing some weird experimental thing he was genuinely a brilliant pop writer who was never truly appreciated to the level of his talent.

 

I like his voice more but as a whole Matt's songs are better. I'd say Dan's best is better than Matt's best, but his worst is waaay worse.

I have had no interest in Justin Bieber before the purpose era, can't think of a single memorable song between Baby and What do u mean, Sorry and Love Yourself are kinda gross but at least they're catchy

Elliott's run from Either/Or through Basement On A Hill is transcendent songwriting from a musical perspective. agree with it or not but in my experience as a musician what he does with his guitar and vocal melodies is more impressive than a lot of the "greats".

 

Probably a very unpopular opinion, so brace yourself.

I prefer Conor Oberst to Eliott Smith. By quite a large amount.

 

John K. Samson and John Darnielle are better than both of them.

Sufjan's best album is Carrie & Lowell by an extremely wide margin. Okay no, I'm exaggerating. I just really don't like Illinois.

While we're on the topic of singer songwriters:

I'm happy that Mark Kozelek's music is reaching a wider audience (yes, the dude is kind of a dick), I'm baffled at how much acclaim that Benji got. It's certainly unique but not one song on that record (or anything after) holds a candle to his early SKM stuff like "Lost Verses" or "Carry Me Ohio". But hey, cool

 

My favorite singer songwriter is Joshua Radin. I am Zach Braff.
