You check out those two new Bob Weir songs? I'm really enjoying them but anyone I ever talk to that was into The Dead when Garcia was still around is always shitting on Weir and his old country songs.

lets play that swap popularity game again. Give me Pavement over Nirvana. But then still have Steve Albini produce their records.

That sounds truly awful. Albini would diminish everything that made Malkmus great.

Clarity and BA are the only full albums by them that I can listen to anymore

I don't know about that. Albini was great at capturing the rough edges of artists who didn't feel the need to be polished. He also produced Pixies records and Jawbreaker's 24-hour revenge therapy.

Think he just would have made Pavement sound BIGGER.

  8. good songs, skilled improv, emotive vocals, jazz, country, cowboy songs, yosemite sam, heroin, pot, LSD, mushrooms, giant catalog, exploring bootlegs, letting one band consume 75-90% of your music listening
Yeah! I love em both. I love Bobby. Fuck those people honestly Bobby was as important as Jerry imo. The cowboy songs are some of my favorites, a well placed one in a setlist is just so powerful. One of my favorite sequences is from a '73 show, it goes like this:

    Truckin>Other One>Big River>Other One>Eyes>Other One>Wharf Rat

A "Big River" out of "Other One" is so affecting, after the tension, buildup, deep exploration of TOO Big River is this loving but fast paced release that's actually only temporary and is gone after 3 or 4 minutes, and you're shoved back down into this darker space.

Who doesn't love a good El Paso or Mexicali Blues? Fuckin squares thats who. My dad and his friends used to go to shows in cowboy hats and when people would ask why they'd tell them they were there for the cowboy songs

Yeah, 1975 does absolutely nothing for me outside of like 3 tracks on their latest.

The best things about pavement were the small moments. They didn't need polish, their early albums were hardly polished - but they certainly didn't need to be a "bigger" band or "rough" or anything. Their best moments were songs like stop breathin or filmore jive. Those don't happen with Albini.

  11. American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, for sure. Extremely accessible pure americana tunes. Very few people I know have listened to those and not liked them. After that check the OP of the Grateful Dead Thread

i agree with that to an extent but don't you also think Nirvana's small moments were what made the songs? Anyone could have done those loud chords and raspy singing, it was more the strong contrast between that and the brooding verses with the dark sounding chords that caught on and became a trend. If you're talking about differences in dynamics, Albini certainly only lacked that when the band he worked with just wasn't the kind of band to ever tone it down.

I wouldn't say the small moments made the in Utero songs, no. Wrong record to make that point in support of nirvana

New 1975 has no staying power, Bad Suns are bad, Butch Walker and Frank Turner are both just okay.

I might have agreed with this before seeing both live, but The 1975 blew me away after seeing them live and I really soured on Bad Suns after seeing them
