I thought they showed promise on the first album, I'm hoping I like the new one more though

 

Ben don't listen to these haters (lol, dont take this seriously pls) most musicians are really inconsistent across their careers. Give me any classic folk/country artist that's held in higher regard and i'll give you a handful of brilliance and tons of bullshit. Oberst has done something a lot of artists have not done when i listen to his records - left me rethinking the world and the way I'm navigating it.

 

Yup! I'm a big fan (and so are the kiddos) of 1989. I thought the record was just fine as is. I had Adams version in my music for a bit and eventually ended up deleting it because I got annoyed whenever the songs would pop up. It would just spark me to go listen to the original, if anything.

Peoples Key, Upside Down Mountain, Payola, and now Ruminations coming... That's a pretty damn good stretch of music.

I haven't seen as much hype around it as the first album which is bumming me out. With all the clips of music they've been teasing it sounds like all the things I loved from the first record ratcheted up a notch. I was skeptical they'd be able to top it because I LOVED all 11 songs, and the chances of them doing that again were slim, but frankly it's looking even better

 

That record is fine! Jejune Stars is a fucking jam!

I don't like 21 Pilots, don't like any Ryan Adams songs I've heard, don't have an opinion on Bright Eyes' music, don't like the 1975, don't know who Bad Suns are. I think I'm caught up?

a live album I have of theirs is my favorite release I've heard

 

Ranked against his entire discog, it's lower on the list but I never found it repulsive. I listen to it from time to time and rarely skip anything if it pops up on shuffle.

 

Oberst's only lyrically sound material is the desaparecidos records and fever & mirrors. Everything else is shit from the witty kid in your creative writing class who is majoring in psychology.

Completely disagree with Jake about Ryan Adams though. He's a fucking nerd of a personality but truly a great writer and musician

 

I can't really listen to a Decemberists album front to back without getting bored but their sound is fine enough

 

Literally have never heard of bad Suns, don't care for 1975 and have never willfully listened to the decemberists

another band that's more about the lyrics than the music, really. Crane Wife is their best to listen to start to finish but my favorite songs of theirs are on Picaresque
