I’m into “I can feel a hot one,” “The grocery,” and “the moth (that’s the one with the huge overdubbed scream thing, right?).” I swear guys, I’ve tried!
I am listening to “I Know How To Speak” rn and was thinking about how I think Andy Hull is likely my favorite living songwriter and then I opened this thread... ...actual true story.
Reporting back, Andy Hull/ManOrc still don’t do much for me outside of stuff on this album........BUT Y’ALL, THESE KEVIN DEVINE SONGS ARE FANTASTIC. “Wheel well” is probably song of the year, chorus of “I love you...” hits so hard, lyricism in the first verse of “Supposed to be” is masterclass.
I love every record KD does, truly. But nothing will ever sit with me the way the first five records do. I jumped onboard at Put Your Ghost to Rest, immediately went backwards and then hyped Brother’s Blood so god damn much. But I do think his lyricism has improved with every record, and songs still manage to hit me. I Was Alive Back Then, for example.
I Was Alive Back Then is sort of the bookend to Ballgame according to Kevin Devine. Both have this great “self awareness”, for better or worse. I started listening after Make The Clocks Move and Split the Country. Its been really interesting seeing how much his music has changed, and it’s been cool seeing the side projects, crowdfunding success, Devinyl series and so many other things. Such a nice person and he always seems so grounded in reality. So, also fan, even if I don’t think every song is great.
I made me do this (in order of release): Wheel Well Supposed to Be It Never Stops No Sides I Used to be Someone Carnival Brother's Blood The Burning City Smoking Ballgame Noose Dressed Like a Necklace
Ballgame It Never Stops I Used To Be Someone Brother's Blood It's Only Your Life Just Stay A Story, A Sneak and.... Another Bag of Bones Bulldozer Between The Concrete and Clouds Army 11-17 Hand of God All of Everything Erased I Was Alive Back Then Brooklyn Boy Me and My Friends The Longer That I'm Out Here Heaven Bound and Glory Be Bubblegum and I could keep going but I'll spare people
It’s be crazy how big his catalogue already is. Love them all but mostly seem to come back to Make the Clocks Move, Brothers Blood, and Instigator.
