Backstreet Boys – “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” Video • Page 2

Discussion in 'Article Discussion' started by Melody Bot, May 17, 2018.

  1. Hmm. I couldn't find a link to verify that (and trust me, when I was little I wanted to BE a Backstreet Boy). I'm not really sure how you can "verify" one side of a story when it comes to something like this though, and he's had multiple allegations...

In the bsb doc and the house of carters nick came off rly angry and aggressive to me and I've disliked him since. He hasn't made it easy to give the benefit of the doubt, but I've also not even seen a reason to doubt the allegations.

  3. Pretty much where I'm at.

  4. I didn't mention "verifying," per se, and these crimes are a really complicated thing to try to prove, especially years after the fact. I didn't know there's been multiple allegations though! That's sad to hear. I'll need to go read up on those.

  5. From the little I saw of House of Carters, he just seemed really dumb to me. Like, sincerely uneducated. Which is sad, but I suppose that always really weighs against him in terms of questioning whether he made wise choices in his youth.

The collective response in this thread to this conversation is incredibly confusing. Why are BSB still cool, while Sorority Noise/Better Off/Brand New/seemingly a million others because this scene is depressing all off-limits and dead to everyone? Heck, why is this not part of the accountability in music thread? If anything, I'd think BSB's audience back in the day (mainly tween/teen girls) would make this situation even worse than others.

  7. Do you actually want to talk about this, or are you just mad that people have so little tolerance for bands like SN/BO/BN? I'm honestly asking because it's hard to tell from your tone.

Anyway - assuming you actually want the dialogue, it did come up in the Accountability in Music thread when it happened.

I would guess this isn't hitting as hard in this community because BSB aren't nearly as near and dear to most folks (around here) hearts as the bands you named are. Thus, there will naturally be less discussion about it. I also think (despite them being very active for the last few years) people don't really see them as relevant in the same way, regardless of accuracy.

Nick Carter is grade-A trash. Between Brian's probably-has-a-MAGA-hat ass and Nick having multiple assault allegations under his belt, I wouldn't say they're "still cool". This stuff is complicated and I've personally been hitting "skip" every time a song comes up since the allegations broke because it makes me feel sick to my stomach. The conversations in our current scene tend to get really heated really fast because there are so many people defending the guys in question. The lack of fervor here probably has to do with the absence of that as well.

This answer probably wasn't satisfying and maybe it wasn't "good enough" but honestly? I fight this fight every single day and as a human and as a survivor sometimes I get really, really tired and sometimes I just don't want to fight. So I come in, link to the allegations, and call it a day.

As far as the rest of the world goes - I can't speak to that.

I actually wanted an answer - I've read you and Kiana talk about how we should respond to victims and perpetrators in the scene for literally years, going back to absolutepunk, and quite honestly I've learned a lot. I'm not sure what tone I had, because the question was sincere, and you guys are the resident go to authorities on these things around here it seems (you got quoted because you posted the link).

Your response doesn't have to be good enough or not. I had just caught up on the accountability thread from the last few weeks and had seen so, so much hostility towards Better Off (deservedly so), and then pretty quickly flipped around at other news stories and read this. The difference is massive, and I didn't get it. I understand you can't fight every fight, and it gets tiring; it's just after seeing everything y'all HAVE fought, this would be one. I guess I disagree, though, on relevancy - I feel like the BSB are way more known/prevalent in the mainstream than virtually any band we talk about regularly, which makes the accusations worse/more dangerous. But I could be wrong, and I missed the conversation in the accountability thread anyway.

Apologies if I came across as combative - I was genuinely curious. I'm personally trying very, very hard to be sensitive to the feelings of people who've been through things I haven't, and I've purposely tried to not support people who have taken advantage of other people. I was really trying to understand how this is different and people are still positively posting good things about their music, given the accusations.

I think it does have a lot to do with the lack of fans and deep connection to them on this forum. I don't think bsb has a ton of fans around here aside from mostly nostalgia fans, but from what I've seen, most of the "bigger" fans who still somewhat keep up or kept up with the band until the allegations are calling it out when they come up in conversation, and I do see other pop culture forums mention it too tho I don't think the media has grabbed onto it enough to impact them much
