Me and @soggytime are on the same page with this it rocked fiancé didn’t go (“it’s more likely I’ll think it was a waste of time than loving it”) probably 20ish people in the theater, older couple left as Manny went into the theater near the end which was weird! other group of older people walking out behind me did not like it
Loved this until the montage sequence. That took me way out of the experience and made me look at my watch a bunch lol
There’s a tweet earlier in this thread about Tobey playing Charlie Chaplin and he doesn’t so what’s up with that
every time the whole The Aristocrats of it all was staring to wear me down Flea would say Margot Robbie sounds like a donkey or Jeff Garlin would say awooga the second she entered the room and it was like maybe I love this movie At the very least one of Margot's best performances and I mostly enjoyed it I love that Damien's wife is one of the best parts about this during the whole Jazz Singer scene I was like are they gonna address the elephant in the room, no pun intended He is also 100% right that looming specter of the Hays Code was the true villain
I was surprised to find out that was Damien Chazelle’s wife. Thought she had a lot of presence for someone with not a lot of screen time. Was also surprised that Olivia Wilde was in this for all of two seconds and Samara Weaving wasn’t given much to do.
For a movie that is pushing taboos with all the bodily fluids, it’s so funny that the most taboo pushing “that was too much” is the end montage. the 1952 sequence is essential to this movie working at all. Hollywood is hell, but cinema can be beautiful. Manny helped build it, and it nearly killed him and he’s better off now without it…. But god damn movies are something. And the silent era wasn’t the only revolution in cinema. Encompasses how it’s always evolving and always changing with new technology. The stories repeat themselves over and over again as we watch the ghosts of people long gone on the silver screen
Really, really did not need the Tobey section of this lol. I did like portions of this, but overall it’s kind of a fascinating mess.
Just saw this, loved it. One of the best movies and best movie going experiences I had all year. Gave it 4.5 on Letterboxd
I actually don’t find this messy at all, it’s very purposeful (down right masterful) in its use of music, color, editing and pacing. All of it is reflective of the story arcs at all times. A hilarious movie on top of it, maybe the hardest and most I’ve laughed all year at the movies.
Bummer it’s bombing but I’m not surprised. It’s hard to sell audiences on another three hour epic over the holidays while avatar is also in theaters. I’ll see everyone in a few years when this is reclaimed as a misunderstood masterpiece and one of the last times a filmmaker was allowed this budget to do whatever the fuck he wanted
Fuck, I loved this, especially as someone that loves excess. Great score. Definitely felt like he wanted to make Hollywood Wolf of Wall Street (especially with some of the casting) and Boogie Nights — very Scorsese and Anderson. Jovan Adepo was incredible in the blackface scene. Was the Weaving casting intentional because she resembles Margot? Also, was the actress in the first filming scene Brad Pitt kisses SUPPOSE to resemble Angelina Jolie? Kinda weird.
