Well the montage at the end was very bad. It could have been affective if it just included clips up til 1952. Seeing the matrix and avatar was bad.

 

The montage is what elevates this to all timer status. All of those picks were key. Sound isn’t the only disruption - the digital age was another one. Also each clip is a special effect kind of about the destruction of man? T2, dinosaurs in Jurassic park, the matrix, the na’vi in avatar - it’s all intentional

 

Three hours about how the film industry destroys lives and tears people down and then a montage about the magic of movies is just completely tonally off.

 

I also thought this was Margot’s worst performance

 

plus it fits in with Brad's speech earlier about where films could go in the future. visualization of dreams.

 

This is the paradox Chazelle has been obsessed with in each of his movies. They are all about people ruining their personal lives in order to do something great - Whiplash, La La Land, First Man and Babylon are all about this.

This is the story of the film industry - an industry that has ruined so many lives, and yet movies are fucking rad as hell.

 

This movie is 18 fucking hours long already and they have the gall to add a 10 minute montage of random movies at the end I am furious

there’s some good shit but it feels so masturbatory and disgusting by the end of it

 

finally had to time to sit down with this and it was somehow good but also bad. wonder how it would of been if I had time to see in theaters. Oh well

 

Been thinking about how good this is. Might be time for another rewatch

I remember watching Mank and Babylon, loving both, and then being utterly perplexed by the reactions to both movies.

 

Hating on both was fun and correct.

 

Hell yea. Another excuse to rewatch a perfect film that will be renowned as one of this decades best for the third time

Babylon has some fun stuff but is mostly bad. Mank is just bad.

 

Mank’s a perfectly fine movie i don’t understand having strong opinions on it being “bad”
