Just got back from an advanced screening of this. Some general thoughts: Really liked it, maybe not as much as I thought I would, but still a great time. I'll probably see it again. Jamie Foxx is fantastic, so is the whole cast, but he stands out. The whole third act is a big thrill ride. Every action scene is fun as hell. The minor gripes I have are a couple of lines of dialogue are kind of cheesy and weird (which is odd for Edgar Wright) and some character motivations. And some spoiler-y thoughts: Like I said, the third act gets real fun. The moment when Bats dies was a surprise, but was pretty perfect. You could feel Baby getting close to his breaking point. I liked the John Hamm revenge tour as well. But it does have some issues. In particular Kevin Spacey at the end goes from the guy who's threatening and blackmailing Baby to the guy who's saving him. It seemed real sudden. Also, the chemistry when Baby and Debora seemed slightly forced on their first meeting and I could have used a little more time with them, but it's convincing overall. Some of the stuff at the end would have been better if we saw a moment earlier where Baby struggles without the headphones. That may have been the point of the accident flashbacks though. Still, go see this movie. It's great. The volume in theater I saw it in was just a tad too quiet, which was kind of frustrating, because I think it limits the impact of the (fantastic) soundtrack. Hopefully next time I see this they pump up the volume.
A couple of the flaws mentioned above me are fair but other than that (and the fact that, in hindsight, I kind of think Baby could've been played by someone other than Elgort) this completely lived up to my hopes. Certainly the coolest movie I've seen in a while. Don't really know just yet where this lands in the pecking order of Wright's films but it's undoubtedly another notch of awesome for him. Most everyone will have a blast with this
I definitely really liked it. And I'm planning to see it again when it comes out officially. For some reason every time I write about a movie, even if I liked it, I put too much emphasis on the flaws haha.
Also, the opening scene is pure perfection. One of the best I've seen in a movie since The Dark Knight if I'm being honest.
Haha, no worries. As excited as I am for this, his casting never did much for me, even so after the trailer, and always wondered what if someone else was in the role.
He's not NOT good or anything, just not my top pick. I can see someone like Jesse Eisenberg doing better than this (and maybe even redeeming him for BvS and American Ultra). Hell, Wright could even bring Cera back for the Baby role and it wouldn't have been bad at all Regardless, this is still a top 3 movie of '17 thus far for me, may even be tied w/ Get Out
