This surpassed my lofty expectations. Pretty easily my favorite movie of 2017 thus far. The music, the quips, the editing (holy hell, the editing), the action sequences, it all worked for me. Got pretty emotional when Baby takes his foster dad to the care center. Threw on that playlist above in the car afterwards... never had more fun driving home.
Holy hell this was a blast. Kinda shaky towards the end, but overall definitely one of the best movies of the year.
Top drawer. My theater tried its best to ruin the experience with really poor volume quality, however.
I also use "Brighton Rock" to pump myself up. This film had me in a way not many films have and I had the highest expectations.
This happened when I saw it too. Pretty frustrating. This is a movie that needs the volume up to 11 if there ever was one.
Fuck... I saw this tonight but for a few personal reasons I couldn't really concentrate and get invested in it. I enjoyed it but I feel like I have to go again. I really hate the fact that my first viewing was ruined though
Btw I highly recommend Nerdist's latest Edgar Wright episode. Such a cool, funny and genuine guy, plus he has a Chris Nolan anecdote that's really funny.
This was incredible the 2nd time around. Noticed so many more little things. 1. Baby eventually quotes everything he sees flipping through the channels on the tv. "They grow up so freakin fast" , the monsters inc line, and "How's that working out for you?" from Fight Club. 2. Coffee-getting opening credits scene is very similar to the Shaun going to the shop scene in SOTD. 3. Baby (at the laundromat) also is quoting Buddy (in the elevator) regarding the name of the restaurant and it being 'the finest wining and dining of all the wines and dines around' 4. 'Octane' coffee. Get it? 5. Steals a car from the old lady in front of a BOOST Mobile sign. Get it? 6. Buddy's real name is Jason; he's certainly behaving like jason in a Friday the 13th movie near the end, plus the Jason/Mike Myers joke earlier in the movie. 7. Prepping for Heist #2, part of Doc's plan is to steal a larger truck in case they need to 'ram some cops off the road'. The climax of the movie is Baby using a large truck to ram Buddy - who's in a cop car- off the edge. 8. There's some extending phone-ringing off the hook moments very similar to Shaun Of The Dead Looking forward to finding more!
Seeing this in a few hours with the gf, I've been hyped ever since that first trailer dropped and can't believe it's out already.
I'm seeing this tonight, the first movie I've seen in theaters since Logan (I don't go out for movies much anymore). So pumped.
I've been thinking about the film the last day and it's almost near perfect. My only complain is that Hamm being the villain and being obsessed with killing Baby seemed kind of dacted on. I know it was foreshadowed when it mentioned he would kill for his wife, but it still bugged me. I also viewed Buddy and Darling as grown up versions of Baby and Debora who never left that life style and that's who Baby and Deb would have became if he didn't leave. Both would kill for the woman they loved, Buddy acknowledged he had a go-to song. The only thing different is that Buddy was much more of a criminal but the connections between the two are heavy.
Do soundtracks count toward end-of-the-year lists? Because this will certainly be near the top of mine if so.
Saw this today, came very close to eclipsing the best of the Cornetto Trilogy. The soundtrack though is above and beyond previous Wright films not just because it is packed full of great songs but because of how they are used throughout the film. Never thought I would see a great action scene underpinned by the song Hocus Pocus.
I was already pumped to see this and with SP being my fav movie, you've nearly quadrupled my excitement. I hope I feel the same as you when I finally see it.
Haha i think I'm going to drop out this thread for a while. So stoked. Comedy Bang Bang has an episode with Jon Hamm and Wright, fyi.
