I realized Johnson could act as I was watching The Scorpion King

 

Much like Vin Diesel, Dwayne was pretty interesting in his early career before he got lazy and just did stuff for his brand. Vin never really got into the entrepreneur stuff though, minus advertising Street Sharks.

 

Idk the specifics of this street sharks stuff but man that makes all the sense in the world

 

was gonna say this. walking tall, the rundown, pain and gain … not great movies but he’s at least trying stuff. the fast movies and jumanji were the downfall

 

I think San Andreas marked the beginning of his roles becoming mere advertisements for his image. Jumanji, Rampage, and the later Fast & Furious movies continued that trend. Everything has its end (the failure of Black Adam was a wake-up call), and maintaining that physique doesn’t seem enjoyable anymore (see Dave Bautista, etc.), so perhaps Johnson realized it was time to pivot.

 

I’ll defend the Fast movies because they’re dumb as hell and Jumanji because at least he’s playing against type.

Beyond those, I can’t defend much past maybe “Get Smart,” basically when he stopped looking human and more like a muscle-thumb. His cameo in “The Other Guys” remains goated though.

i saw the trailer for this for the first time the other day and thought it actually looked pretty good.

 

I actually had the opposite thought - if it weren’t for Safdie’s name, I’d have zero interest in it after watching the trailer. I suspect (?) it won’t be the movie the trailer made it look like, though.

 

Yeah, saw this before Eddington and felt the same way. Looks very good.

 

The rock is at least going for something different. Who knows if it’ll work or not but at least he’s not phoning it in.

Kerr has an incredible story and I really think Dwayne is gonna do great in this (compared to his uh prior work)

 

Even if it’s either generic or not good, Johnson needs to get back to doing roles that’s not just him in an Under Armour shirt punching things.
