I actually like MGK's voice, it's the lyrics on that song that fucking bug the shit out of me. The lyrics on this whole album feel kinda immature tbh. The sound of the album is great though, Feldmann mixed this super well. Drums are punchy, guitars are super clear and bright, and the vocals are dripping with attitude. Travis & Mod Sun killed the drums too.
I really enjoy MGK's vocals and I think Bois Lie is one of my favorites on here. I understand the issues with him and he's absolutely gross but his vocals aren't the problem for me This album is a damn blast through and through
He didn't actually mix! Adam Hawkins – mixing (1–3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12) Manny Marroquin – mixing (4) Neal Avron – mixing (7, 11)
I don’t care whether people like MGK’s voice or not, but I do care that he’s a fucking creepy asshole and he shouldn’t have the platform he has, shouldn’t be getting this attention in the genre over genuine pop punk artists (and imho, especially marginalized punk artists) while being an asshole at the same time (see his dumb beef with Corey Taylor), and shouldn’t be getting any adoration on here based on his well documented creepiness.
I agree with this. I actively avoided listening to his previous work, but I also want to support Avril.
I should clarify that I think you can listen to this album and enjoy it (I haven’t listened yet but I plan on it) while also taking into account MGK’s creepiness/shiftiness and realizing he shouldn’t be on the album. My comment was mainly directed at people I see on here who still post positively about him/his music.
Okay I'm ready. I didn't want to make a call until a few listens. It's a very very very fun album and easily her best in 15 years. It's the album I'm surprised it took her this long to make honestly, but the timing was finally just right with "pop punk" making a comeback. Now is every song a mix of every pop punk cliche ever.... yes. Is it produced to the max with as many woahs, la la, quick stops, sound effects, and every song being v/c/v/c/bridge/big end chorus.... yes. Are the lyrics as corny as all hell.... yes. But is it still awesome, fun, and a great listen...hell yeah haha. Here's my tier list: A) - Love it When You Hate Me - Kiss Me like the World is Ending - all I wanted - break of a heartache B) - cannonball - bite me - Bois lie - love sux C) - avalanche - fu - deja but And the only song I didn't care was the slow song. It was fine but just nothing spectacular, since she's had dozens of much better songs of the same ilk. Great stuff. Now let's get some kick ass music videos!
This album is super fun. The only Avril albums I've really liked in full in the past were Under My Skin and especially Best Damn Thing but this one is right up there with the latter
The cynic in me wants to rip this album to shreds so bad, but then I put it on again cannot not love it
I'm struggling to enjoy this. Like, it's fine, Bite Me is a banger, but it feels very contrived. Some of the lyrics are bad and very cliche, it feels like they were trying too hard to write a pop punk throwback album. In saying that, it's not terrible and there's some fun moments, but I'm just not loving it like a lot of people are. Maybe i'm just too old for pop punk now.
Bite Me, Kiss, FU, and Bois are all bangers. Need to spend more time with the rest but those are the ones that stand out the most right now.
Alright, I think my ranking is: 1. F.U. 2. Bite Me 3. Cannonball 4. All I Wanted 5. Deja Vu 6. Dare To Love Me 7. Break Of A Heartache 8. Love Sux 9. Kiss Me Like The World Is Ending 10. Bois Lie 11. Avalanche 12. Love It When You Hate Me
Its super contrived haha. Like to the max. You know you've heard all of these songs somewhere before. Every song is essentially about the same generic shit. But in the end. Still super fun and songs are still continuously growing on me.
But theres definitely a skill in doing that, so I give the avril team credit. Of course Avril herself. She's the differentiating factor. If this was a simple plan or a 5 seconds of summer or blink or golsfinger album, id probably write it off pretty fast. I 100% want a vinyl here though and a big giant poster cause I love love love the cover of this.
It's definitely got an "empty calories" feel to me, fun as it is. Probably her fourth best album for me, but I'll also probably pull it back out and play the shit out of it in the summer.
Listened to this yesterday. It’s fun. Probably won’t come back to it a bunch but might mix a few songs into a playlist. Definitely not the MGKsong. Is it his mission to sound so terrible in two different genres?
