That was also released around Christmas when people were free during the week. If this was released around the holiday it would have the same if not better.
That might have been part of why I liked it so much honestly. Because the first time I saw it was last month watching all of them in a lead up to Endgame, so I was a lot more invested in the parts that connected to the whole story than the individual stories themselves. It also put a lot of things together for me that I had known from seeing a lot of the later MCU films (Civil War and Infinity War in particular, and like figuring out who Vision and Scarlet Witch were). There was a lot of "ohhhhh I see now" moments for me in that movie.
Thor was a slight weakness but it’s one of the few “event movies” the MCU has whose thematic focus is laser focused and supported by nearly all the onscreen text IMO. That stuff weighs more on me than costumes and effects, which inherently don’t generally age well in big movies. I get where you’re coming from, “age well” is usually a phrase that rankles me when used about superhero movies when not filtered through a sociological/cultural lens. But those are valid points of contention
Yea like Thor playing Fortnite is technically NOT gonna age particularly well but hey for our point in time it's the thing. Also cross promotion for Thanos appearing in Fortnite but hey Although it being still the thing 5 years later is a BIT silly but oh well
That said Thor’s presence in Avengers 1 is more justified thematically than a lot of characters in Civil War, I think underserved characters are a commonality in most of the MCU
Would like to also add Hela, Frank, Fisk, May, and FitzSimmons. Huh, Thor, Korg, Valkyrie, and Hela. I guess I just really like Ragnarok. If y'all aren't watching SHIELD, wyd
So, does this knock off Avatar for sure? I love looking at box office numbers, but I'm also bad at predicting trajectory.
I feel ya, maybe that wasn't the right phrase to use. I still enjoyed it. You're totally right in that it's laser focused due to the nature of not having 22 films prior to it.
By all accounts, it'll top Titanic by Sunday, so beating Avatar by the end of its run is pretty likely. The bigger questions now are if it crosses $3 billion (potentially) and if it'll manage to top Force Awaken's domestic numbers (doubtful).
To be honest, outside of Iron Man, Avengers, and Iron Man 3, the MCU wasn't really great until 2014. First two Thor movies, Iron Man 2, and Hulk are all easily the worst in the franchise, and the first Captain America movie isn't really all that either.
To be honest Thor has always come off to me as a boring character in the comics. Once they changed his personality in the MCU and allowed Hemsworth to make it more of his own instead of trying to bring the comic Thor to life things got much better for the character.
I'm still a fan of Thor 1 tbh and even Thor 2 has fun stuff in it. Obviously Ragnarok is actually in a league of its own that FAR trumps the first 2 Thors but still. And I liked Thor in all the Avengers movies, Chris Hemsworth really sells him for me
It’s amazing how long it took for them to realize how funny Hemsworth is. Like, even with just the slightly more comedic material Joss Whedon wrote for him in Avengers 1 it was pretty clear that the guy could be funny if given the right material.
Fun fact I randomly forgot until now: I've never watched a Hulk movie, but in like 4th grade I bought the book based on the Eric Bana movie and I loved it. Lol.
