No one arguing that spoiler culture sucks is out here intentionally going out and spoiling movies for people. They’re just resistant to the idea that talking about like, something in a movie trailer being considered a spoiler that sets a not insignificant population of people off.

Because what are spoilers actually indicative of? Are you upset that someone affected the momentary visceral adrenaline rush that comes with the confirmation of narrative? Most fans seemed to agree that Iron Man was going to die in Endgame, the significance wasn’t knowing it was going to happen, it’s experiencing how the story and character get there. That stands on its own regardless of foreknowledge. “No, I am your father” isn’t one of the most iconic scenes in cinema because it shocked everyone, anyone born after 1985 basically absorbs that knowledge by osmosis before they ever see Empire Strikes Back, it’s iconic because it shocks Luke and changes the course of the narrative, theme, and character of Star Wars

Idk if “everyone” thought Iron Man was done. I think it was between him, Cap and Thor for most. Thor being the least likely.

Wasn’t trying to say anyone in here was doing that specifically. Pretty much everyone used tags in here.

For me personally, knowing about Iron Man beforehand would have made it less impactful on the initial viewing without a doubt. But I also had no idea about Vader being Luke’s dad til I saw it as a kid so maybe that’s why I lean more towards not spoiling things lol

I feel like the how is way, way more important than than the what. I knew going in Tony and Nat would die and Cap would grow old with Peggy, but it was how those deaths were handled in the movie that made them impactful. Hell, I hated Cap's ending until I saw how they went about it, and it made way more sense in the context of the movie. Not how everyone sees it, obviously, just my two cents

There’s a nice middle ground in the spoiler argument where it’s not the end of the world to hear an out of context tidbit you didn’t know going in, but you would prefer not to know everything.

I saw this today and knew about what is arguably the “biggest spoiler” and it didn’t detract from my experience.

Do a lot of people extremely out of pocket with the leaps and bounds they go to in order to avoid spoilers? Sure. Are they weird and sometimes awkwardly aggressive in their disdain for spoilers? I guess. Have these folk spawned a whole new group of “you’re a fucking asshole with no taste if you give a modicum of shit about spoilers” people? Yes, and that’s an equally strange position to take, imo.

Basically what i’m saying is that this was a great way to wrap up everything that led up to this finale, quite a way to spend a Saturday morning!

I cannot believe this asinine convo is still happening a week later. I’d rather go back two weeks and read spoilers than ever read people’s thoughts on the topic at all. This is dumb, and the Billy Madison gif needs to be posted and then this thread can be locked. Jfc.

I personally don't care about spoilers (I was in this thread as soon as the movie came out and didn't see it until like 5 days in) and I think it's absolutely ridiculous that people involved in the movie can literally be hit with lawsuits for saying what happens (that's "spoiler culture" going way too far imo), but I also think there's absolutely no reason to be an asshole and spoil something for somebody that doesn't want to know anything

For endgame to beat the force awaken it needs to do 315 million the rest of its lifetime at the us box office. It might be hard with detective Pikachu coming out this weekend then next weekend is John wick 3 then the week after that is Aladdin and brightburn then the week after that is Godzilla 2 May is stacked with a ton of competition starting this week. It needs to do 600 million to beat avatar at the world wide box office. I’d love to see it beat both but it’s gonna be hard imo

True. I believe the worldwide total is a more realistic goal than the domestic.

No way it tops TFA domestic numbers unless it vastly overperforms, which isn't likely given the competition coming up. I do think it'll top Avatar's worldwide numbers though

I just want it to top Avatar’s worldwide box office. Star Wars can keep the domestic, idc.

Avatar is a more interesting movie to be number 1 of all time. Not based on any previous IP, the weird vision of great director (though it’s not a great movie).

But yeah box office numbers are never really interesting to me

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

fair question but for me its like rooting for a sports team to win. More I love a movie and the people involved the more i root for it at the box office. If a movie succeeds it improves the careers of all of the people involved. For actors makes them more a draw for casting. It will give studio more incentive to give directors a bigger budget if they know their movies make money. Makes a sequel more likely to happen.

For example Baby Driver killing it at the BO will be huge for Edgar WRights career since his past movies did so poorly at the box office. Jordan Peele will be given more power/creative contro/bigger budgets/etc... because studios will trust him as long as he keeps bringing in the dough.

Also vice verse if a movie doesnt do well. even if its not an actors fault it can sink careers if movies fail. Off the top of my head Taylor Kitsch comes to mind. Not his fault that John Carter flopped hard but after that studios werent going to give him lead roles for big blockbusters.

my problem with the box office stuff is that I have moral qualms about how much money movies make, not like I'm not slightly contributing but the amount of money funding and generated by the MCU could like do so much good but instead it's deaging Fury in Captain Marvel

plus it always feels like when there's a movies set in like the 40s or 50s and the producer guy or studio head reads Variety to see the dailies every day to see if he's gonna let our protagonist make their movie
