so that's it. you nailed it. this is why i can't listen to the album anymore. he didn't bother me that much on S/T or their earlier stuff
Oh boy I know most will disagree with that list but it's pretty close to mine, except City Of Evil would be #3. I have a special connection to S/T, and The Stage brought me back as a A7X aficionado after almost a decade without caring about them.
hard to care much given their affinity for NFT’s and synyster gates liking extreme far right propaganda on twitter constantly but I’m still kinda hoping its good

Sounds like they decided to add some Rush and Queen type influences to their sounds. Instrumentally it actually sounds pretty cool...but dear god M. Shadows cannot sing for shit.
Ditto I'm onboard with the prog influences and the doomy Alice In Chains like riff but his vocals are even more jarring than they were on The Stage. He sounds like he's physically hurting.
I'm not going to say Shadows is a good singer, but I've never had a problem with his vocals and I absolutely loved The Stage.
listen to one song from every album back to back to back and tell me he hasn’t gotten considerably worse as a vocalist
I think there are a few things going on here. Obviously, like any other human, his voice is going to age some and it's no secret that he's had a few vocal procedures since WTF days (latest one was around 2018 I believe) but overall he sounded great live around that time. I think that a lot of what we hear on this track was (a) a stylistic and tonal decision and (b) mixing choices overall mixed with the obvious changes/aging that his voice has endured since 2016. You can listen on headphones and pick out the background vocals that sound like pretty standard fare for Matt. From what he and the other guys have said on Discord and other outlets, this is going to be another concept heavy album with the material covering existentialism (specifically Albert Camus' philosophy of absurdist existentialism) and I think this song will make even more sense in the context of the album. Given the meaning of the song where the writer is going through this life just to end up at the end of the line and realizing that ultimately the only meaning of it all was personally intrinsic....there was nothing greater that your life offered the world, it would make sense to make the vocals be a little more tired and low-energy. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some different techniques and processes/filters used for the vocals and instrumentation to convey all of the ideas, so I'm hopeful for some surprises when the whole thing drops.
