Haven’t read anything else in this thread yet, but that was awesome. Definitely better than the second one. Plot felt refreshed, more investment in the characters beyond neytiri and Jake, and still a visual spectacle. Very interested in seeing in the future movies the potential for eyes to develop as a more tangible character rather than an abstract concept, which this leaves as an open point. only thing I didn’t like about it was that they set a record for saying bro in the first five minutes
I didn’t watch any of the trailers and also thought we’d be in volcanoes for this one lol. I don’t really mind since the underwater scenes continue to look incredible but I’m hoping we see new areas of Pandora soon.
I thought this was on the same level as TWOW, which is better than Avatar 1. A lot of back tracking though. Character gets kidnapped. Rescue mission. Another character gets kidnapped. Another rescue mission. Also would have liked to see the fire nation more and spent more time around volcanoes. My favorite shot of the film was when the colonel was walking past the volcano. I was not a fan of the framerate though. 48 fps made it feel even more like a video game. 3.5/5 same as TWOW.
Now that I'm home and can sort out my thoughts, I think this was my favorite of the three. More memorable sequences, more emotional heft, and I think it went into some dark places that I wasn't expecting it to go. The scene with the almost-suicide and especially the Jake-Spider scene. The former I think they could have explored a little deeper, but I liked where that story thread ended up. I also like that Quarritch is getting some depth to him, that he actually cares and is proud of Spider despite them being on opposite sides. The scenes with him and Sully were fascinating too, and while I doubt he'll undergo a heel-face turn, I wonder if 4 and 5 will have him explore his own relationship with Pandora that services his goals. I understand why people are making the retread comments but I don't feel that's truly accurate. I think I read somewhere that 2 and 3 were once one story and were split, and that makes sense because 3 is taking the ground covered in 2 and going further with it, exploring the fallout of 2 and bringing those plot threads to a better/stronger conclusion, and I think that works. I imagine 4 and 5 will feel the same way, taking a different path from 2 and 3 but the both of them equally being part of one whole, but we'll see. I also low-key love the marine biologist freeing Jake and being like "Jake, this way! BTW, we've never met, my name is..., big fan of your work. Pretty funny stuff in the middle of a fairly serious film. Finally, I like the character and I'm interested in where they're going with her, but it will never not be weird to hear Sigourney Weaver's old woman voice coming out of a young girl's mouth.
We got 2 after 13 years and we only got 3 after 2 years because they filmed them back to back (I think) as far as I know they haven’t started production on the next one? And Cameron keeps talking about wanting to do other stuff. Plus with the somewhat recent death of his longtime partner Jon Landau, idk, just a feeling this may have been discussed in the thread already
He already started filming stuff for 4 but it still depends on how 3 does and he apparently said recently he's unsure if he's going to continue but I'm sure that's just burnout. I guess we'll see.
I think it's pretty clear when he split the sequel in half he decided to copy and paste the ending of 3 onto 2, with some plot points and dialogue on the side
I disagree, or at least think this is a vast oversimplification. The way I look at it, the ending of The Way Of Water was purely set up for the fallout at the start of this film and a much grander battle at the end, where it's not just Payakan fighting but all the tulkuns. I think you couldn't really get to where we were in this film without what happened in the previous film, it's cause and effect.
It does feel like what would have been a trilogy was expanded - part 2 became way of water and ash & fire. Part 3 will be movies 4 and 5. There are beats/ideas that are repeated here from the previous movie but it’s not a deal breaker at all for me. This was spectacular
