I think I remember hearing JB saying he was learning a bunch of Darkest Hour material around the time they were writing Constellations since they did a tour with DH and he was seeing them play every night.
really boring album imo. just the same old stuff from them. i think i've just outgrown the style these guys play.
Thirty And Seven (lead guitars in the first minute) Ocean of Apathy (intro, melodic section at 1:43, pretty much the second half of the song) Mariana's Trench (key change at midway point, again pretty much the second half of the song) Meddler (section starting at 2:04 until the end of the solo) Also I never noticed how much Meridian reminded me of Casting Such A Thin Shadow by Underoath. Get quite a strong post-metal vibe from it.
thanks! I am really dying to know what specific melodeath or 90s scandinavian (im guessing you mean at the gates or similar) you are comparing it to? at the risk of being annoying I need more info please haha.
Oh At The Gates for sure but I also had In Flames, The Haunted, Arch Enemy and Soilwork in mind as those are all the ones I grew up on. Specifically stuff in that Gothenburg realm
Exact opposite reaction from me. Everything from Rescue & Restore up until this one truly felt like the same album over and over. Particularly with Found, Phantom Anthem, and Guardians being very copy and paste. This feels like they went back to what made Constellations so good and then pushed on that a bit. I haven't enjoyed anything this much since Messengers/Constellations.
maybe i need to give it another listen. every album since rescue & restore has just been more and more samey for me.
I'm fully with you on that. To the point I was surprised how good this was compared to the last 5 or so. I went in thinking it was going to be another copy and paste job.
This is probably their best since Rescue & Restore, Phantom Anthem seemed like them doing paint by numbers ABR sounds but even that one is good compared to what I felt was really low effort on the past couple releases. I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed this one, keep coming back to it.
Meridian live is incredible, Dustin plays guitar and Jake plays bass and they’re all up just ripping on that main riff.
