very impressed is that three reviews this week? you are keeping up with your promise of more reviews. love it!
To no surprise it doesn't quite capture the magic and energy of ROC (could/does any album?) and that record's ability to knock you slackjawed with it's unpredictable/inventive/memorable song structure, but it's a nice set of ATDI tracks. I think for me it's their best after ROC.
I get it but i think it's also a little unfair for publications to be knocking these guys for not recreating a moment from 2001
This is exactly what I expected. It's a very good album. It's definitely impossible for them to live up to the expectations many had with a follow up years after their last, but this is still great and I'll be listening to it a fair amount. Omar's guitar work on this album is awesome
Yea I've gotta say bye to reviews that say it doesn't live up to RoC and mark it down based on that. Shit's 17 years old.
It fits pretty nicely in their catalog. It's not gonna top RoC but it stands right up there with ICO and the rest. Agreed though
I listened to it once but I don't see any replay value. Too many other good records out at the same time that are much stronger.
yeah it's "fine," thats why i dont fuck with it, fine isnt good enough for a band like this and the record comes off as boring at best and a cash grab at worst, cedric still writes lyrics for this band the same way he did on the first go around and omar still writes riffs like he did on the first go around and both have proven since atdi's initial break up that they're each capable of so much more. its like they had to regress their artistry to fit what they thought atdi should sound like and as a result the album is just another atdi album, not an exciting return of a band that sounds better than ever. they sound like how theyve always sounded. not better. and you can say oh its been 17 years give them a break but slowdive just released a flawless album after 22 years so im not buying that excuse.
I see the criticisms in that regard. The part about them achieving more interesting avenues after ATDI, BUT I still think this isn't a "cash grab". There is some cool stuff on this. Again I've said this a lot. There is nothing on here that touches In/Casino/Out or Vaya. Though I admire the intensity.
i dont like sounding cynical by calling it a cash grab but when they initially returned they pretty much said that was a factor for their tours, at the time they werent planning on an album but im more prone to call it a cash grab than i would be otherwise because of what they said with regards to the tours
I do remember them saying all that. Though I just feel the record itself is at least trying to sound relevant.
Yeah it feels like they didn't try to do anything special, they just tried to make something that sounds like them but didn't actually put the music itself into consideration and as a result it sounds just as stale as so many of their imitators did
imo, and yeah this is cynical as fuck, but i think they wanted to keep touring but couldnt keep playing the same old material so they made a new record to tour on
As much shit as I give Refused for their new record, they at least TRIED to branch out. They just failed. ATDI didn't try at all.
