I would kill for an album, ep, song, or anything from these guys. I know Dan doesn't like touring but that would be the dream. I was quite lucky to see them 3 times in my youth.
i could see them doing a vinyl repress cash-in that is all the rage, maybe some limited dates to celebrate. but for some reason i don’t see them bringing the whole machine back up to speed. would be dope though
Miss them. Special band. Couldn't ever bring myself to watch that final live performance movie they made. Love Love Love (Love Love) was our first dance at our wedding back in September.
Lafcadio is the most scene adjacent, some songs remind me of Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity instrumentally.
It’s still astounding to me how much of a hidden gem this band remains despite Dan’s huge success later on. Less than 30k monthly listeners on Spotify while individual songs that Dan has worked on get millions of plays each month is crazy. Obviously they haven’t been active in a long time, but still.
Breaking up before streaming really took over probably doesn’t help. It doesn’t feel like they really fit in fully anywhere either as they’ve covered a broad range of sounds in only a few releases. A shame as a lot of songs had crossover potential, could’ve been synced for shows etc. Dont know what it would take for people to discover or rediscover them, but I’m crossing fingers that happens at some point. Let’s prepare some TikTok dances
S/T is incredible, a flawless album. YCTIWY is a band in competition with themselves about how they want to sound. I much prefer what I presume is the Dan side of that with The Narrows, Rapture, We's Been Waiting etc - which all seem like a natural progression from S/T. I'm not a big fan of Duermete or Sleepyhead at all which if I remember from the documentary was driven by Julio. It wasn't a surprise to see them break-up after that
I get this but it's also the sound of them pushing themselves artistically. their most complex songwriting is on that record. I also love how blown open and limitless it feels, almost like a Broken Social Scene album. the production on that album is insane. hearing those songs live during their farewell shows - pretty unforgettable
omg, I've never felt more like an idiot. I've never seen this band live, never really watched interviews. Just been listening to self-titled since randomly discovering s/t since 2006 and occasionally Lafcadio - which for the past 20 years i've been pronouncing: "La-Fa-See-Doe" (thinking it was supposed to be a clever riff off Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti). Just started that farewell documentary and heard how it's actually pronounced.
