Indie rock band, Arts Fishing Club, has returned with a new single called “Gary Busey.” The band plans to support the single with a key support slot with The 502s. In this brief interview, I asked the band about the significance behind the name of the single, Arts Fishing Club’s core influences, their favorite “storytellers in music, and their plans for the rest of 2025. If you’re enjoying the new single, please consider staying in the loop about the band here.

Thanks for your time today! What’s the significance behind the name of your new single called “Gary Busey”?

The end of the song rolls into party trance “loosey, juicy, crazy in the head Gary Busey,” a lyric that fell out of my mouth in the studio but encapsulates the wild ride of being an independent artist. It’s CRAZY. The experience is absolutely wild. Highest of highs and the lowest of lows (from a career standpoint). Gary Busey is an incredible actor but is known for playing some WILD and CRAZY roles that don’t fit the normal box. I guess in my subconscious somehow connected our experience to his fun yet wild portrayals of life.

Arts Fishing Club has been known for telling great stories in your band’s music. Who are some of your all-time favorite storytellers?

I love this question. My uncle Jim is by far my favorite storyteller of all time. He both has wild experiences but also has the ability to take the most mundane story and make it hilarious. More famously, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Michael Crichton (the only person to have a #1 movie (Jurassic Park), #1 tv show (ER), and #1 book (Jurassic Park: Lost World) all at the same time. I’ve always been fascinated by fantasy and science so Crichton’s ability to weave fantasy into reality made him one of my favorite writers growing up.

What emotions or feelings do you hope music fans will discover once they listen to Arts Fishing Club?

Joy. Even in the sad and introspective songs. We really hope there is a sense of joy that permeates the entire catalogue. Life is really hard. And we hope to always address life’s hardships head on with the approach that despite the pain, we’re lucky to be alive.

What are some of the core artistic influences behind your band’s music?

Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Bon Iver, Kings of Leon, Dave Matthews Band, The Head and the Heart, Wilderado, and so many more.

Once this single has released, what does the rest of 2025 look like for Arts Fishing Club?

A new single every 3-4 weeks for the next 8 months! We’re also heading out on some lengthy tours. Headlining, and then opening for The 502s.
