I'm with you on this 99% of the time but I feel like if you only watch Arrested Development once you literally won't get like 1/4 of the jokes I haven't seen the new season yet though
I don't buy this at all. The most common thing about Arrested Development is people gushing over how rewatching the seasons over and over and over again make them better and reveal more jokes. I liked season four much better recently because of this and I'm sure season five will be the same way.
Right, but I loved the first three seasons the first time I saw them. The extra jokes I picked up on the second time around just added to the experience. A second watch might reveal some hidden jokes but I doubt it’ll be enough jokes to suddenly make me enjoy a season that I very much struggled to get through. And my point still stands that I shouldn’t have to watch something twice for it to be worth my time. I should be able to enjoy it on first watch and then anything I pick up on subsequent watches is an added bonus.
‘Arrested Development’s Mitch Hurwitz Reveals Tambor-Walter Incident: “There Was More To It Than I Realized”
He seems a little more well spoken than others on the incident. Still, the whole “we don’t have physical evidence” about Transparent stuff doesn’t come off well. Sounds like denial more than anything.
I’ve rewatched the original series pretty much annually (give or take a year or two) since it was released. I still maintain it being one of the funniest and well-written series I’ve ever seen. I rewatched them again, followed by the remix and just finished 5. I feel like the first three seasons are like candy. Just endlessly funny and entertaining. Perfect timing, callbacks, running jokes, plot lines, etc. Season 4 gets some of that, and 5 even less. I think they are actually pretty good in comparison with a lot of other shows out there, but in comparison with AD 1-3, they are more like a sometimes comparable parody. 4 and 5 lessen the quality of the show as a whole, and between those and the Tambor stuff, has tainted one of the greatest shows ever made (in my opinion, of course). I’d rather have spent my life saying we were robbed of more seasons of a phenomenal show than have gotten what we got.
Watching these new seasons is kind of like watching washed up celebrities join Dancing with the Stars. Ha
Also I’ve avoided this thread until I finished season 5 to avoid spoilers. Which I guess explains my opinion on the 5 page debate on how to avoid spoilers.
She was the highlight of season 5 so far for me. She’s always been good, but I think the majority of the laughs this season have come from her.
Just caught up, definitely enjoyed the episodes overall. Laughed at loud at multiple things per episode. Was it "as good as the first 3 seasons"? No. But who cares, I just watched 8 episodes of TV that I liked so I'm happy. Was gonna catch up with old posts in here but only saw discussions of spoiler tags and cast member physical appearances, so I'll pass.
I was thinking about this last night and still enjoy this new season so far a lot. As far as comparison, seasons 1-3 are like 100, season 4 is 80, and season 5 is 90.
I got around to starting the new season this week and have just seen the first 2 episodes. It’s hard not to feel a little weird watching it. It feels more like the recent reboots that we see as opposed to a continuation of the original series
Finished the S4 redux today and I did enjoy it a lot more than the OG version, though I definitely agree with there being WAY too much recapping of stuff we just saw. Probably gonna watch all of the available S5 episodes tomorrow
I love to rewatch, especially season 1-3, I liked the remix more than the original season 4. I think I will enjoy the remix and season 5 even more on future rewatches but there is just something special about those first three seasons. This morning, I was thinking about Michael's face when he opened the dead dove bag or Buster yelling "It walked on my pillow." Those are just two moments that crack me up so much. I can think of a million of those moments in those first three seasons. For me, that is the show's strength.
Finsished the new episodes today. Not exactly hilarious but I enjoy these characters enough that I didn't really mind. Weirdly I thought George-Michael and Maeby were easily the highlights and Gob was probably the weak point (besides the incredibly strange way they handled Lindsay). Overall I still really enjoy this, although this is exactly why I hate the idea of Netflix/other streaming services splitting seasons like this. E8 just ended like any other episode which makes the whole thing just feel very unfinished, which I guess it is. Hope we get the rest sooner rather than later. Have they already shot the whole thing?
Finished the new season. Really disappointed in it overall. At this point I just want to see the final 8 and wrap this up.
So this is probably nothing, but I’ve watched the 8 episodes again because I was kind of distracted the first time through and I noticed a line that stood out to me in episode six. Now I know they’ve often played on Maeby’s name as a joke, whether it was overt or subtle, but Gob has a line that gave me pause: Gob: You know I'm as straight as they come, I just got a lot on my mind right now with work, slash, am I gay, slash, Buster's in jail. Kitty: He is? What for? Gob: Well, just for maybe killing this woman my family owes money to. I think it was his robot hand. Again, probably nothing BUT this being the show that it is I can’t help but wonder if I’ll ever look back on that line and laugh knowingly.
