I’ve reallly been struggling with whether or not to watch the new season, and it’s definitely coming from a selfish place of it being one of my favorites and not wanting to miss out on something that’s important to me but knowing that I’ve dumped problematic people and shows for way less, and this interview just sealed it for me. I just can’t support the creators or these actors who clearly have no respect for the safety of women on their sets and who only care about protecting Tambor’s image and not everyone who has been and continues to be hurt by him.

It’s also ridiculous that they have claimed ever since the news dropped that because he never did anything out of line on their set that they would keep him on, and now every single cast member agrees that he was abusive to Jessica Walter in front of everyone?! Seriously, which is it?

They should have fired him and gotten Christopher Plummer to replace him. If any show could have pulled off that meta joke it’s them.

the interview in a few words:

all men: "we have no idea what happened on the set of Transparent"

also all men: "here's exactly what happened on the set of Transparent"

i know they were discussing the Arrested set on paper, but they (Bateman particularly) were clearly using big vague Hollywood experiences to create an analog to what may have happened over with Amazon.

also, who knows how chopped up this is from the interview in full, but Shawkat remains silent from the time Bateman dismisses her points 'til the end.

oh well. there's an insurmountable amount of quality tv out there, more on air in the last 5 years than i could likely tackle for the rest of my life. this will be easy not to watch.

These guys come off as such assholes. Whether or not they truly believed what they were saying during all of this, I'm sure them being so dismissive must be because they've never dealt with abuse directly or know someone who has because if they did, I can't imagine being so callous.

I'm still going to watch because I love the show, but it's going to be odd laughing at it.

It's just sad af that they were so preoccupied with making their male coworker feel comfortable and supported (even tho they admitted he was hostile!!) They failed to support a female coworker who they've also known for a really long time. And it's the boys club in a nutshell and what enables abusive men. Other men will rush to ensure other men are coddled and supported at the expense of a female coworker. It's a wonder some women never feel truly accepted in male-dominated spaces because u can work alongside men for years and still not get their support when u need it. I'm glad he apologized but the fact that it was their instinct to do that is rly telling.

And y'all know if a woman did what Jeffrey did those men would prob not have her back. She'd be called a bitch and difficult to work with.

Jesus listening to that Jessica Walters audio was heartbreaking. You can also hear how pissed Alia is. Honestly grown ass "men" acting like children with a "boys will be boys" mentality. How could you sit there next to Walters practically crying and continue to try to be like "no but I mean come on Jess it happens! Let it go!"

I'm glad Bateman apologized and fully acknowledged he was wrong instead of going for a "I didn't say phrase things right" type thing, but it's pathetic that he didn't realize this before.

I genuinely don't understand how you could be a man in Hollywood right now and not be thinking about these things. When you get asked these questions, even if you truly don't believe Tambor did anything wrong, wouldn't you think they'd at least know from a PR perspective that when asked these types of questions they need to pretend to be supportive of the victim? Obviously that would still be disgusting, but it just baffles me how you could be in this interview and think "yea this is going to come across just fine".

And another thing that pissed me off about this interview is how glossed over the sexual assault of Tambor's accusations were. To the point that when I first read it, I had to go look up what happened because this interview made me think it was really all just about him being verbally abusive. To the point that I feel this interview was intentionally deceitful to try to make people focus on this instead of the even worse accusations from Transparent.

I just want to believe things are changing but honestly it's going to take a long time and I just hope we keep pushing and making it clear that this is not acceptable anymore.

Exact same for me. I didn't know what he was accused of and after reading the interview thought "he's an asshole for screaming at people, but if that's all he did then this is going overboard" but then I read more and of course found the other shitty shit. I think it was intentional by the interviewer as well.

I definitely had heard it before, but it was a while ago and I didn't remember exactly what happened, so I thought maybe I was remembering wrong, but nope his other accusations are absolutely repulsive.

And I'm not even saying that the verbal abuse shouldn't be a thing either, but I guess it's just an easier pill to swallow. Idk this whole thing was already pretty gross and now with this interview it's just gotten worse.

I really liked what this had to say about losing the emotional connection to great works and how that is on the abusers and not the fans. Some of the most important pieces of media in my life have been “lost” in this process and I’m constantly struggling with how to keep any meaning for them going forward.

I’m curious to know when an apology is like acceptable? I never know what is appropriate or not with these kinds of things. Like for me personally i think his apology is pretty good and i think it seems like he recognizes what he did was super out of line and recognizes he can be better.

But it seems like people have a lot of issues with it still, so I’d like to be educated on the subject because i honestly feel pretty ignorant about it.

There's no real answer here, honestly and unfortunately. Everyone has personal lines with these things. In my personal opinion, as far as Bateman goes, it's acceptable to me, since he's not the abuser in this situation and quickly apologized about his comments and made no attempt to try to deflect blame or say he was misunderstood - he owned that he was wrong, but it'd be nice if he went a lot further and actually showed active support for victims of these things and tried to take tangible steps to make a change.

I'd also completely understand someone who is not just going to accept an apology on twitter for supporting an abuser. And really the person who this apology matters to most in this situation is Jessica Walter, since she was the one directly wronged by his comments, so I'd hope he would speak to her privately about it and give her more support.

Yea for me it's more about the actions you take, because you can say whatever you want but if nothing really changes about your future attitude or actions then what was the point. I think it was decent all things considered but I never want to say "alright all is well and good now he apologized!" in situations like that.
