I agree that it seems a ton of the jokes were callbacks, but I think it's just trailer fodder seeing that they did the same thing for season 4 and there were tons of new jokes in that season that wouldn't make sense in a trailer.
read the Tambor interview, and he comes off just awful imo. things like mentioning the new philosophy book he's been reading, noting every time he cries, saying he's already "learned his lesson" rather than maintaining an attitude of continued improvement, the talk about the "open/sexy set". lines don't "become blurred" for a 70 year old man around a younger predominantly female cast, lines get crossed.
Also the fact that the victims of his harassment were exclusively trans women, when he's supposedly trying to be a champion of trans awareness, was particularly gross.
The article also goes out of its way to say that he was formerly looked up to as a “folk hero of the LGBTQ community”, which I don’t think was ever true. There was always backlash against him playing that character. Really weird look.
'Arrested Development' Pay Dispute Erupts Over "Recut" Episodes (Exclusive) Seems weird that this wasn’t cleared with the cast first
I can see both sides, if Netflix legally has the right to cut and edit however they choose, then they are well within their rights. But yes, as an actor I would feel like I should get compensation also.
I was wondering how they would handle that. You would think they'd have done a better job communicating this with the cast. I guess since they didn't have to shoot new footage or anything, I could see the argument that they don't need to be paid for it. Also, if the show gets syndicated (which it sounds like is the goal) whatever they would make off of this re-edit would be peanuts compared to the residuals from syndication they'd get in the long-term. But at the same time, they agreed to be paid by episode and now there's 7 more episodes. This seems like uncharted territory so I doubt there's any official rules on this or anything.
Yeah, which makes it even more complicated. I assume Netflix's legal department did their due diligence to confirm that they didn't HAVE to pay the actors for the recut. But I can understand why the cast isn't happy about it. Hopefully this doesn't spiral into a bigger disagreement that makes season 6 even less likely.
I've never really thought about that situation. Do actors get paid more when a movie is released with an unrated cut and there are more scenes with them in it?
Eh, workers deserve to be paid for their labor. They have a point in being upset about how Netflix handled this.
The deal with the main actors "paid $100,000 each for their stand-alone episodes, $50,000 for each installment where they had a little screen time, and another $25,000 for ones in which they barely appeared." If you re-cut and change the screen time for each, I'd definitely want to be paid correctly. Especially if the entire move was to get this into syndication and make Fox and the producers more money.
Yeah, that pretty much seals the deal, imo. I would understand if they were paid flat rates for the whole season and then it was edited differently later, but even then, still seems shady.
I just hope they get it sorted so they can finish off the story (if this is indeed part 2 of a 3 part story like Mitch initially said.)
The re-cut will only technically make Netflix more money when the show hits syndication. At that point, I think the actors should be compensated for the re-cut.
Actually I think it will only make money for Fox since they still produce the show and Netflix is just the distributor.
This is correct, the show is produced by Imagine, Hurwitz and 20th Century Fox. Fox is also the distributor. The streaming rights were purchased by Netflix, but the syndication rights almost undoubtedly still lie with any Fox to sell to whomever they please. BUT Netflix also undoubtedly has a clause in the deal that prevents the show to air anywhere besides Netflix for X amount of years
2 episodes in and the new S4 format seems like a big improvement to me. The original S4, the episodes were way too long and dragged in spots. Still not perfect as certain characters do not appear in certain episodes with the remix, but it feels closer to original AD to me. This is how they should have done it originally.
Hmm. I haven’t really been following this thread but my good friend who, much like me, did not enjoy season 4, said he’s watching the recut version and that it’s “completely on par and in some ways better than the first three seasons.” That definitely has me intrigued.
I would temper your expectations about comparing it with the first three seasons. I don’t think anybody in here has felt that. I definitely don’t think it’s even close to the first three, but it’s an improvement to the original cut
I felt the same way and it's completely transformed it. It just feels so much faster and easier to watch like the old seasons. It's bumped S4 from like a 4/10 to a 7.5 or 8/10 for me.
