The label definitely sucks. They basically forced her to record Max Martin songs for Sweetener because they worried about selling the Pharrel songs. If you haven’t read that Fader profile I recommend it. Industry Rule #4080.

Blazed - so bad
The Light Is Coming - probably her worst song hands-down
R.E.M. - fine but boring
Sweetener - great
Succesful - bad bad not good
Borderline - forgettable
Get Well Soon - great

I find zero redeeming qualities.

 

I love blazed and the light is coming is pretty fun. R.E.M. is good not great. Same for Borderline.

The rest are great. I love Successful!

 

I wish I would never be confronted with another Max Martin song in my life.

The Oharrell and Max Martin songs both sound like trash next to Imagine and Thank You Next tho

wow agreed across the board though i think i like "borderline" and "blazed" a little more than that

the more important credit in all the max martin songs is ilya imo

 

I grew up in the Netherlands in the 00s so I’m aware. I mean the EDM infused pop music we were flooded with. Sounded a lot like this, at least parts of it.

 

"no tears left to cry" sounds like late-'90s max martin pop mixed with, like, two step garage
