I have a hard time ranking the albums because they each have their fair share of stinkers but Yours Truly is definitely my favorite. It’s the most fun to me. Think we’re still waiting on the definitive magnum opus but right now I’d put sweetener or TUN second with the new record maybe able to squeeze one out for 3rd.
Thank u next Sweetener Dangerous Woman Eternal Sunshine (can see this going up a spot) Positions Yours Truly My Everything
Dangerous Thank u Sweetener without the Pharrell tracks My everything Positions Yours truly The sweetener Pharrell tracks
My everything last is fucking bonkers. No hate, entitled to your opinion but I just did a double take.
thank u, next is her best album to me because it does the best job of balancing her various sounds while delivering a song cycle that felt like it was actually about her. everything before sweetener felt largely impersonal, just often well written songs sung extremely well with flashes of personality. sweetener has a number of fantastic singles that felt like it was really connected to her life (I love love love what “breathin” does to reflect the ways of getting through a panic attack in the chorus) but thank u, next does everything bigger and with more pop/R&B sensibilities while really letting you into both the playful and difficult sides of where she was. “ghostin” in particular is a remarkably poignant song, but I also love “imagine” as an opener. all three singles are bangers that belong in any top ten AG song list. it’s the only Ariana album I have on vinyl.
I can’t really differentiate a lot of them anymore, but I know I was huge one Yours Truly (though there are some corny songs on there in hindsight, but also insane R&B songs) and I was mostly disappointed by the two after that, and to varying degrees happy with everything after that (I think). I need to do a discography run. Listening to the new one right now.
Dangerous Woman and My Everything are my 1 and 2. I think those are the two where she leverages her influences best and really shows off vocally. I like thank u, next a lot but I just prefer her singing full out
I’m done listening to this new one. It’s lyrically interesting, but musically it’s mostly either not my thing or doesn’t grab me. It’s not bad, but apart from two songs or so I won’t go back.
oh gosh. Honestly, I don't think I could guess because I am having some of the same issues with the album as you where it's not super exciting or memorable musically, so I can't really recall the songs by name yet. I would have said The Boy Is Mine if it actually sampled or interpolated the Brandy & Monica song, but since it doesn't, I have no idea.
Positions is a great album man. I went through the whole catalogue and made a playlist with songs I like and Positions ended up having the most. I don’t like any of those songs as much as my favourite songs of other albums (except Dangerous Woman and the new one), but as whole I think it’s the most consistent album.
Positions (10) Yours Truly (8) My Everything (4) Thank U, Next (4) Sweetener (3) Eternal Sunshine (2) Dangerous Woman (1) This is my ranking based on how many songs per album (in brackets) I added to my Ariana mega playlist yesterday. I think I like most of those Yours Truly songs more than those Positions songs though, so I would probably change their order. I think My Everything is in the correct spot above Thank U, Next, because I like its four songs more than the four off of Thank U, Next (with exception of the title song of the latter, which I think is one of her three best songs). Then again, I probably prefer more of the songs I did not pick off of Thank U, Next, than the songs I did not pick off of My Everything. Same for Sweetener for that matter. So it's complicated. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk All that being said, I think that when she puts her mind to it, she is the best R&B artist (as in, she makes the best songs and, to me, sounds the best) of the last 10 years, if not more. I just really don’t care about the pop songs, let alone the EDM songs (though I now have a certain nostalgia for Break Free).
Haven’t listened to the full album yet but finally got around to the new single and damn it’s good. And the SNL performance with live vocals and instrumentation!? (drums!) Good stuff
Dangerous Woman was the first vinyl I bought when I moved to America and I've liked nothing else of hers. But this is kinda a bop. I wouldn't mind hearing some of these in a more acoustic, Sigrid style 'up close' sound.
As a vocalist she’s up there with artists like Mariah Carey and Brandy with me, or at the vey least very close
This album is pretty damn good. Bye, title track, boy is mine, can’t be friends, are all bangers. And 38 runtime… not sure who to thank for that but it’s so nice to not have a bloated to hell album.
