Going through some live videos this morning and the transition from Teddy Picker to Crying Lightning here is perfect.
Album took a bit for me to get into, it definitely sounded like one long song on my first listen, but on the third or so listen songs started standing out. The album has a really immersive sound, it really sucks you in and keeps you there. Also all the songs are really distinguishable and unique. Could see this being the kind of album that offers much more with repeated listens.
I read Amusing Ourselves To Death back in high-school... I didn't expect a reference to it to pop up in an Arctic Monkeys song: Information Action Ratio Great album, but I'm sure it will be as divisive (if not more..) as Humbug was. I gotta say, all of their albums have been growers. I don't think I've really liked each album on the first one or two listens, but this one is catching me immediately. It might just be due to familiarity with their music at this point...
They sound comfortable in their own sound and I hugely respect the stylistic shift from the radio friendliness of AM but man this just bored the absolute hell out of me. One of the more mind numbing 41 minutes of music I’ve ever listened to.
That's what makes it so interesting. The influences they're pulling from aren't exactly left field (Bowie, Pink Floyd, etc) but mining those influences after an album like AM is, at the very least, an interesting turn for the band
Yeah respect to them for going for something really different, can’t say I’d put it above any of the last three records though
Exactly what I was going to say. This is great and all in terms of artistry (respect fellas) but the record overall is a let down for me. Especially given the long wait. Hopefully it will grow on me over time.
Yup. It’s not bad... it’s just boring. It would be cool if this was a one off concept record they released after a follow up to AM but for this to be the follow up to that record? After 5 years? Disappointing.
Tranquility is more consistent of an album for me than AM, AM has the first 4 tracks that are KILLER and then the quality drops a bit and then picks it back up at Why'd You Only Call Me.
It’s consistent cause every song is alike in overall sound. It’s a concept record though so I kind of expected that. Also you don’t like “I Want It All” and “Fireside”? I love those songs. I love AM. I’m bummed this record isn’t doing anything for me.
I don’t like I Want It All at all. And Mad Sounds is only alright. Everything else on AM is varying degrees of wonderful, though.
I know this isn't really a particularly new take but going through it again, it gives me such Humbug vibes. It's like the chilled out cousin of that album. So many cool effects and sounds throughout the whole thing. The science fiction theme really helps the album I feel.
It's interesting to me that Humbug was divisive because that's the one that has been the most immediate for me. My Propeller sucked me in instantly.
