It’s a constant battle between FWN and Humbug for me at the very top but honestly my favorite and least favorite albums by them have an extremely small quality difference
Ive only listened to Humbug the last 2 weeks. That one grabbed me...only took like 9 years after release. lol
humbug is incredible. always made me laugh when it seemed to be their most misunderstood album, though it certainly seems this will replace it in that regard haha
also, people should check out the mini mansions album from two or three years ago. two of the guys are all over this in guest spots/touring band and the third is in QOTSA haha
This album and Jack White's newest album has been perfect listening for this cold and rainy Friday night. Also, my top three tracks on this album so far have been the Title track, Science Fiction, and One Point Perspective. Awesome songs.
I’ve been thinking about this album all day. I can’t remember the last time I played the same album 3 times in 1 day.
I've always been mostly positive on this band albeit never a SUPER fan but goddamn if this isn't one of my favorite left turns from a massive group in a long time the pulp comparisons are dead on just great hilarious lyricism from Mr. Turner I LOVEEEE that they chose to follow up a streamlined and crowd-pleasing record like AM with something so singular and weird
Yeah, this as a follow up to an album like AM is pretty legendary in my book haha. I think this album will become extremely appreciated over the years. Its just so interesting.
still absolutely loving this and the fervent divide of opinions on it. the kind of bold move you only see from bands really comfortable with themselves and the risks they want to take
Yeah this is a band absolutely comfortable with themselves at the peak of their powers. They can do whatever they want, and have done with this record. I saw someone else say this before but I'd much rather have a record like this, where the band are inspired and doing what they want, than for them to feel forced to do a guitar driven album with little creativity.
yep, and (for me) that's what half of AM was, just semi-enjoyable variations on basically the same theme. Arabella pinches a melody straight from Black Sabbath, R U Mine? and Why'd You Only Call Me? basically recycle an entire chorus and so on. there were flashes of brilliance there but this is a total revelation in comparison.
Black Keys comparison definitely makes sense given that AM really infused their sound (& borrowed their producer I think?) for the AM album right after doing a large US tour with the Black Keys.
This lyric stood out to me too, but I think he's trying to be superficial in the same way most people are on things like social media. You can imagine a lot of comments underneath an instagram post from a famous actress really focusing on the "side boob" revealed by what she's wearing. It's especially cool if you can appreciate the Pink Floyd reference in the next line.
