yeah this is without a doubt my favorite thing released this year. incredible. but i am, admittedly, a total mark for the band.
There’s a lot of influence from that time period on this album. I hear a lot of The Animals in my listens too.
yeah like, opinions and subjectivity and all that jazz. like im on the opposite side in that i cant see how someone COULDNT like this but i also recognize that thats just me and its reasonable for someone to not like this or at the very least appreciate it from a distance. for my money id say it could well end up being my favorite AM record. its kinda everything ive ever wanted them to do. its a sound theyve toyed with ever since the debut with Riot Van but now theyve fully realized it and it just fucking sings.
Oh I definitely could see how a casual Arctic Monkeys fan would hate this. AM brought a lot of "radio" listeners in for sure
For sure. I remember seeing them in late 2013 and the crowd didn’t even know I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, but knew stuff like Snap Out of It
I haven't listened yet, but it's blowing my mind that with a band that went from FWN to Humbug and has changed their sound on every album, anyone could possibly be surprised that this album is different than the rest.
this is fucking excellent. album clicked for me HARD this morning after a couple listens the past day that i enjoyed quite a bit but wasn't crazy over. feeling sort of down and getting lost in this record was just what i needed. the entire vibe of the album is wonderful - the piano, the synth, incredible basslines and alex has never sounded better. i have to dive in deeper lyrically but from a pure surface level the concept is awesome - sprinkling in general mentions of the hotel and all sorts of science fiction references. it's too early to call it my favorite arctic monkeys (and it may never be, with how much whatever people say i am meant for me and my music tastes a dozen years ago) but at the very least i feel comfortable saying some of my favorite tracks on here are some of the band's best - the title track, american sports, batphone and four out of five. this is such a refreshing album from the band.
Album is very good. So different than all the previous albums. Won't end up being my favorite AM album but I really like it
Arctic Monkeys Grow Up and Get Weird On Their Inspired New Album great review from steven hyden, first that i feel has accurately captured the album
Haven't listened yet, but after reading comments/reviews, this seems super different. This is my most anticipated album in quite some time. I'm gonna reserve my opinion til after I listen, but I'm bummed that it sounds like they completely ditched their sound.
Trying not to read comments as I have yet to listen, but curious if anyone received their preorder vinyl early?
Been on a rollercoaster ride with this album throughout the week. First listen, I was underwhelmed (the sound quality of that particular leak didn't help). And keep in mind - I LOVE every one of their albums, with Humbug, Suck it and See and AM being my favorites. So I was kinda bummed. Then, with each listen a new song would suddenly click with me. Four out of Five was the first one I loved, and then Ultracheese. Those are still my two favorites, but now the rest of it is really hitting me as well. Star Treatment is a fantastic opener, and the way One Point Perspective bleeds into American Sports really makes both songs work. The only two songs I'm still meh on are Golden Trunks and Science Fiction, but I wouldn't be surprised if I have an "aha" moment with those soon too. At the end of the day I don't know how it'll compare to their past works for me, because it lacks the emotion and romanticism that I've attached to in their past albums. But it's an exciting addition to their discography. I like to think that a few years/albums down the line, I'll look back fondly on the weird left-field science fiction album, depending on where they go from here. Even if it doesn't end up being one of my favorites, I'd much rather this than if they just were content with making AM Part 2.
