been going back over the discography. still not wild about the debut except for the last few numbers. the first 7 songs on FNW is a relentless stretch.. after that it gets patchy for me until TBHC, which is what finally got me onboard in the first place
they have always thrived in that mid to low tempo lane. Every record I’m always looking for those tracks. “Riot Van”, “505”, “Do Me a Favour”, “Only Ones Who Know”, “No Buses”, “Cornerstone”, “Love is a Laserquest”, “No. 1 Party Anthem”, “I Wanna Be Yours”, “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball”, the entirety of TBHC.
Is also like to point what an incredible year Domino Records is having. Good lord. arctic monkeys animal collective wet leg sorry panda bear & sonic boom hot chip alex g ela minus braxe and falcon
Four Out of Five was a standout on the last album, so it makes sense that it was the lead single. But this new one doesn't sound like a standout
yeah jack it up like 25bpm and you've got a classic Arctic Monkeys kinda riff already, of course that was the single
1. Riot Van 2. 505 3. Cornerstone 4. Do Me a Favour 5. Love is a Laserquest 6. Star Treatment 7. A Certain Romance 8. One Point Perspective 9. Florescent Adolescent 10. Mardy Bum HM: A View from the Afternoon, She’s Thunderstorms, Only Ones Who Know, The Ultracheese
they don't get enough credit for never making the same album twice tbf I saw them play an outdoor show to 20000 people on the Favourite Worst Nightmare tour and it would have been so easy for them to coast from there but they didn't and I respect them for that
I think you could make the argument that Favourite Worst Nightmare is their Room on Fire. It’s pretty similar to the debut but might have the higher ceiling, the 4 best songs on that record are all in my top 15 AM songs.
I think the first two are fairly similar, as are Humbug and SIAS…not identical but the comparisons are there
For sure. I think they’ve operated in 3 phases so far, I’d put the first 2 in phase 1, humbug through am in phase 2 and now phase 3.
reconnecting with the back catalogue and re-evaluating Tranquility Base over the past week or so has been a lot of fun, thought they'd lost me but I'm all the way back in
