Four Out of Five is pretty good, might give the full thing another shot later. to be completely fair my favourite songwriter had been pronounced dead on the day this came out so nothing was getting through for weeks
it's pure bowie/scott walker/serge gainsbourg stuff. your mileage may vary on that, and it's fluctuated in rankings for me, but it's easily the most ambitious work they've released
1. Suck It and See 2. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino 3. AM 4. Humbug 5. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not 6. Favourite Worst Nightmare
Humbug Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Favourite Worst Nightmare AM Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino Suck It and See Not a slight on SI&S just what I return to the least
Cornerstone is definitely in the running for their best song. Humbug is also in the running as their weakest record. Both are true.
I think my list is this inverted, haha. Is it the pop vibe on SIAS that does it for you? Always found it difficult to get into that record aside from Brick/Chair/Stunts/Library (so basically the tracks that could have been on Humbug). Same time of night as AM - post-midnight, but you’re in a dark mood. Possibly while driving but not essential? Might make more sense if your preceding evening didn’t go entirely as hoped and you have some amount of disappointment or doubt weighing on your mind. For me, I go to Humbug when I want to dig into the darkness and harness it rather than wallow in self-pity or sadness (see 505 from FWN!!!)? Does anyone else get that?
god Matt Helders is so good at what he does. listening to Tranquility Base and I get distracted by the drums. really like American Sports. is it... finally clicking?
ran through it this morning and the closing run from TWFEMTFF to The Ultracheese is great - definitely was too harsh on this at the time. further listening required I think. late night drinking method this time.
i am generally against the “you should be drunk/stoned/wait till night/etc etc” thing for most albums but yeah it fits for this
also lol I'm a receptionist at my second job and I totally did the 'good morning, [place of work], Gareth speaking, please tell me how may I direct your call' thing earlier
I dont smoke cigs any more but yeah TBHC to me has always been a alcohol+cigs vibe to me in the best way haha
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didnt we not get a single before TBH&C? I can see us not getting a single for this one until like the day before release.
