The fact that the article heaps all that praise but also quotes the lyric “Born into the abyss/New phone, who’s this?” has me very conflicted
dear fucking god Win Butler's clunkier lyrics never used to bother me much because the music could sell them but that well started to run dry around Reflektor. not sure they can still pull that off
They've always had clunky lyrics, even on Funeral. "My eyes are covered by the hands of my unborn kids, but my heart keeps watchin' through the skin of my eyelids."
I like the contrast between the beginning & the end of that line. First part is deep/eternal/depressive and the second part is light/current/funny. Could make total sense to drop it during a dark disco song or whatever
that line feels funnier/more flippant than what I remember from EN tbh but who knows how it comes off in context
I watched the Coachella livestream and - in a live setting at least - the context of that song did not help that line. I laughed out loud when i heard it. That said, the other songs they played from that record ruled, and it’s not like lyrics have ever been this band’s calling card.
New song is fine, like it slightly better than I did on the livestreams. Definitely not as taken with it as Lightning
This also reminds me a ton of the Dave Matthews Band song “Sweet”, mostly in its themes and it’s buoyancy, a compliment considering it’s one of the only great songs he’s penned since the 90’s. Would recommend.
Aside from Afterlife and Put Your Money on Me, this is the best Arcade Fire song sing The Suburbs. An earnestly gorgeous song.
Lots of stuff I've read is saying this is their best work since possibly Funeral, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
Steve Hydens eyeroll worthy review singles out corny lyrics in Lookout Kids. The song is literally being sung to a young child lol.
Every night I shout the lyrics to “The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton” directly into the face of my sleeping child
