LOL to thinking anyone would buy that at that price (and seeing the replies, I'm not alone in that thinking).

I'd say $600-$750, tops.

 

I’m going to take my MacBook to Apple tomorrow but I’m considering my options for a replacement. The newer iPads are good enough to act as your main computer now right?

I don’t need anything too high tech, just for day to day stuff.

 

I suggest an M1 MacBook Air. Get it with a student discount if you can -- they don't check.

The mid range iPad is due for an imminent upgrade, unless you wanna swing for the pro (in which case see above) I can't recommend an iPad this second.

 

I did not realize you could just get a student discounted device without providing any information lol. Definitely good to know. I’m hoping I can just replace my battery but I’ll keep this in mind if I have to get a new one.

 

Trade in your MacBook and use the student discount for a new Air as stated above - way better purchase

 

Idk if if I can trade it in and get any discount if it ends up being completely dead but I’ll see what I can do. It was dead and then wouldn’t charge even after an hour of being plugged in so I’m taking it tomorrow to get checked out.

 

My MBA M1 (16GB RAM) is legit the best computer I've had. I've had MBP's, all sizes/configs of iMacs, iPads... this thing is killer for everything I need (light gaming, but mainly Photoshop/Lightroom). Definitely give it a shot. So snappy.

 

The M1 Air is the perfect amount of computer for 99% of the general population.

In my opinion it is the single best piece of hardware anyone has ever made.

 

Glad to get some feed back on that, thanks guys. Will probably go with that if I end up needing to replace my current MB.

as far as options go, I suggest sticking with the base model, only upgrade the storage if you need the extra space.

 

M1 Air is a terrific machine, but it’s worth noting it is also expected to see a refresh sometime this year.

 

yeah for back to school season I reckon, so mid Q3.

 

I mean, I understand they'll of course be a very likely M2 chip, but outside of battery life I'm not sure the average user will see/use what the updated chip would offer as opposed to the current one where there's been some nice deals on 8GB ones lately.

Unfortunately I’d like to not go that long without a computer. If I can get the discount I’ll be fine with it, despite a potential upgrade this year.

I may also have to replace a tv soon because mine is acting up and would prefer not to have to do both lol.

 

you're fine to get the M1 now, don't worry about the refresh. So far it's just rumors and speculations.

I got one for my partner last month and she's over the moon happy with it.

 

I’m looking into getting a new MacBook this year, and the Air is more in line what I need than the Pro, but if the new Air has white bezels that’s a very hard pass for me

I never buy white electronics, and I don’t intend to start lol

 

thankfully rumors are more often than not wrong. I hope this is one of those cases.

 

I don’t even know how the M1 Air can be improved this year. Maybe shave a few milliseconds off a few processes that are already insanely fast? Battery life improvements that take it from “phenomenal” to “unbelievable” maybe? I can see wanting an OLED display at 120hz some time in the future, but that’d just be added luxury.

 

The battery life is legit just so, so good. I went Monday to last night without charging it. Didn't even think about it during use.

 

Updating my series 3 watch from 7.4 to 8.4.2 and it’s saying it will take 11 hours to complete. It was at 13 hours about 10 minutes ago. Wild if true.

 

Not really seeing a good reason for them doing this. Kinda bums me out.

 

It is to make it harder for employees to have a better career elsewhere since their position at apple can’t be veirified. All big tech companies reportedly do this.

it’s scummy as hell.

 

You'd think they'd not want to poison the well for employees to leave and then come back in a different position with even more experience. Employees jump ship at FAANG companies so frequently, there has to be a sizable number of people who would do that.
