Is it normal for a 2019 MacBook pro to always have the fan running? Surprised that it doesn't ever seem to shut off in my new work laptop

  2. Is Chrome and or Slack and or Teams open. Heh.

    All three!

Also the whole laptop crashed and rebooted to a black screen due to a "problem" while my work pushed me some Microsoft Office installs. Weird.

open activity monitor and sort by CPU usage, then you'll know what's causing havoc.

also are you rocking the 16"? if so, download gfxcardstatus and manually disable your dedicated GPU because why the fuck not.

Yep that's the one I have! Interesting, what are the pros and cons of shutting that off? Not much of a hardware guy and I haven't used a Mac in ages other than paying bills once a month lol

a big dedicated GPU is a very fast chip to render graphics (such as 3d or video) that the mac sometimes fires up to do some heavy lifting on the quick, but sometimes also completely unnecessarily (I found on my old 15" that sometimes even stuff like Facebook videos would trigger it)

Basically unless you're not doing any graphics intensive work or playing games, you can safely disable it for the time being (it stays in your menu bar so you always know what's up.)

your laptop will run far cooler and you will save a shit-ton of battery life.

Best VPN? I’ve heard good things about NordVPN just curious if anyone has any others they’d recommend

Does anyone use a docking station for their MacBook? I have an HP G2 Thunderbolt dock and my laptop won't detect an external VGA monitor unless I reboot the whole computer. Stops working again if the laptop goes into sleep mode. The Mac seems to see the monitor in display settings, but the monitor isn't picking it up.

So MacBooks don't come with an AC cable anymore so you have to waste 3 plugs on a power strip? Anyone know if there would be any issues using the AC cable that came with my 2014 MacBook?

I've had good luck with Surf Shark. I only chose them because they were running a deal at the time, but they've been reliable and speedy.

Seconding Private Internet Access. Never an issue and fairly priced

Someone has got theirs early and yeah it’s pretty chunky. Very reminiscent of my 2014 model.

  24. Good. The Pro doesn't need to be "thin and light" - it's the pro computer. They have thin and light computers. When they tried to make everything in that same design goal is when they turned the wrong path and it led to oh so many issues.
