Generally, one of the biggest benefits to a dedicated streamer versus TV apps is a more powerful processor and knowledge that your device and apps are going to be receiving regular updates. TVs aren't updated nearly as frequently as streaming devices, and they're usually only fully supported for a model year or two, at best. You may see infrequent updates beyond that, but very rarely does it have much to do with the "smart" operating system.

I've never found TV apps to be as smooth, or reliable as a Roku or Apple TV or Fire device. Plus, the interfaces are usually all around better, too.

I also prefer Roku to Apple TV, but own both and like both. Apple TV can be a little wonky with AV receivers at times, and no amount of troubleshooting seems to help. Fire TV is a distant, light years behind third. Interface is atrocious.

The only issue I've had with my Apple TV is actually more of a Disney+ issue: I can't use HDMI ARC for my soundbar because for some reason Disney+ won't play voices/dialogue, only music and sound effects.

The new Apple TV Remote has a power button that the previous version didn’t. If you have it programmed to control volume via IR it will turn on both the TV and the device.

This is why it's a bad idea to use to have your TV connected to the internet at all. Article is a few years old, but probably even worse now as the tracking gets more advanced.

You watch TV. Your TV watches back.

Got a 13 mini today. I never want a phone bigger than this, please don’t make me. Already feels huge coming from an older SE.

like alluded to above, i didn't realize TV space being replaced by bloatware was a thing. while i knew smartbox apps were safer and more stable, that's what did it for me since the other factors never materially affected my experience much. apparently it's not even something you can fix unless you restore to factory settings which just feels like a nightmare. my google search told me that thats not an uncommon problem. Smart TVs just so quickly devolved from a fantastically convenient luxury to a clunky liability lol

Ok yeah I had no idea about any of that. Thanks for the info!
I had a similar issue a while ago on Paramount+ and discovered that the problem was either the app or TV (forget which) was set to 5.1 surround sound while the sound bar was only stereo. YMMV but I’d check your sound settings because it sounds like it’s outputting in surround and the channels with dialogue got cut.

  9. yikes...we strictly use apple tv in the living room but i think the tv is still connected to the wifi...gonna go ahead and disconnect that shit.

We have AppleTV's (current and last generations) on two of our four TV's. The other two are Insignia Amazon Fire TV's and it's night and day when I go to turn on/find something to watch on the Fire TV's vs the appleTV's. Apple's is just so much smoother/faster/cleaner (and much less cluttered). We have two older non 4k appleTV's but they can't get Disney+ on them, which is what we mainly use on those ones for the kids... may just find some cheap 4k refurb'd ones now that I think about it.

Thanks everyone, you're all 100% right about smart TVs privacy and the shitty app support. Everything is so slow/buggy and I've never been in love with any of the TVs OS's.

You've all convinced me to go with the 2021 64gb version.

The 13 whips absurd amounts of ass. Even coming from a 12.

  18. Jealous of anyone who has a 13 already bc i dont think mines gonna deliver until like a month before the 14s drop

If I'm being totally honest, I really don't use my phone all that much outside of fairly normal stuff—texts, Facetime, Slack for work, Twitter, TikTok, Pokemon Go, music/podcasts, and general web browsing. But nearly all of my actual reading is done on my laptop or iPad. Battery life on my current phone is totally fine, and it's in perfect shape cosmetically.

But the 13 has the squared edges, so....

Coming from a 12 Pro to the 13 Pro, I can honestly say it was well worth the upgrade. The new ProMotion screen, camera upgrades and better battery are 100% worth it.

Got the 11 inch M1 iPad Pro. The performance is insane coming from a 6th Gen. The screen and sound is absolutely amazing for my games.

The squared edges and enormous camera bump are the only things I don't really love about my 13 Pro Max.
