AirPods Pro First Impressions

Apple invited a few dozen media folks to New York today for a briefing and early access to the new AirPods Pro. My initial impression: I like them.

I left Apple’s Tribeca townhouse/mansion around 2:30 in the afternoon, and wore the AirPods Pro for the next three hours: on the subway in Manhattan, waiting (briefly, mercifully) in the cacophonous Penn Station, on the train ride home to Philadelphia, walking home through Center City Philadelphia, and then in my house. The subway, a train ride, and busy city streets are pretty good tests for noise cancellation.

@cryates So is the "off" mode (in control center) them doing nothing -- no transparency, no noise cancelation, but still connected? So basically like ear plugs?

 

First impressions are pretty solid. They sound good and are comfortable. The ANC is pretty good. I'm using them in my office and at 50% volume I can occasionally hear some keyboard/mouse clicks but they're pretty faint. The ANC isn't as good as my over ear Bose headphones but that's to be expected.

 

Off mode is basically what normal AirPods sound like

 

Right. Off is basically what you would expect from noise isolating buds. They block out noise naturally, but not as much as ANC obviously.

 

Maybe a little more noise-isolating, but basically this.

 

Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results

Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2019 fourth quarter ended September 28, 2019. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $64 billion, an increase of 2 percent from the year-ago quarter, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $3.03, up 4 percent. International sales accounted for 60 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

“We concluded a groundbreaking fiscal 2019 with our highest Q4 revenue ever, fueled by accelerating growth from Services, Wearables and iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “With customers and reviewers raving about the new generation of iPhones, today’s debut of new, noise-cancelling AirPods Pro, the hotly-anticipated arrival of Apple TV+ just two days away, and our best lineup of products and services ever, we’re very optimistic about what the holiday quarter has in store.”

“Our strong business performance drove record Q4 EPS of $3.03 and record Q4 operating cash flow of $19.9 billion,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “We also returned over $21 billion to shareholders, including almost $18 billion in share repurchases and $3.5 billion in dividends and equivalents, as we continue on our path to reaching a net cash neutral position over time.”

They made a lot of money. They are, it seems, not doomed.

 

Here’s a design touch I have yet to see mentioned. Each silicone tip has a fine mesh on the inside at the back of the canal part. In theory, this means any grime or wax should catch on that fine mesh without being able to enter the actual grill of the headphone. Thus most of the cleaning should be isolated to the tip itself. Hell of a small detail that makes cleanliness easier. I was hoping this design would keep wax from getting behind the grill and it appears it does.

Got the AirPod Pros there tonight. Excited to try them in the office tomorrow!

 

My paws are on these bad betty’s now. So awesome.

 

Having an 8 year old iMac trying to stream stuff to a 2 gen old AppleTV was rough enough.... trying to stream from a new iMac to it was even worse, so, picked up a new AppleTV today. Was hoping a new one would've already been announced this year, but still felt like something I needed to finally upgrade.

 

AirPods Pro passed the gym test for me with flying colors. I never had problems with the OG AirPods falling out, but these definitely felt more secure and switching between audio modes was useful.

One thing they need to add in a future software update is a setting to choose if you want NC or Transparency on for phone calls. It defaults to whatever mode you are in at the time, and you can switch the mode on the stem during the call, but I’d like the ability to have it automatically go into Transparency mode on a phone call if I’m listening to music in NC at the time. I like to hear my voice loud and clear on phone calls.

 

Actually, thinking about it, I might be able to set up an automated shortcut for that...hmm

so I plan of getting these now they have ANC. Does anyone have a good charging pad that can charge my phone and the pod case at the same time? something thats fairly inconspicuous on my nightstand

 

I have a Nomad Base Station. Kind of pricey, but I got a good deal on it. And it charges the phone, AirPods and Watch. And it’s a very nice and stealth design.

so if other companies are able to make multiple item charging pads why did Apple give up on Apple Juice? Wasn't that their reason? that they couldn't make it work? or where they trying to do something different
