also I transferred my data via what I assume is WiFi and it took less than 10 minutes to get my new phone ready. Sick.

The matte back is only made worse by how gross the glossy Apple feels in contrast when your fingers slide over it.

After having pretty glowing reviews of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, Vergecast this week is absolutely an eyeroll listen. Dieter actually blames Apple for other smartwatch makers not making a good competing product. It's time to unsubscribe.

 

Sitting here with the little UPS map tracker thing up even though I know I need to get work done before I can activate and play with my phone anyway.

 

So it won’t slow down my phone? I will never trust them again after what they did to my 4S and iPad Mini.

i totally forgot ios13 came with the carplay update and was elated when i got in the car this morning.

i hope a future carplay update allows for a wireless connection though

 

I'm pretty sure wireless CarPlay is hardware dependent, as in the receiver itself needs the necessary hardware to be compatible. I could be wrong though. I know my receiver connects wirelessly with CarPlay because it has built-in Wi-Fi. So instead of using Bluetooth to connect as you would think, it connects to wireless CarPlay via the Wi-Fi access point that my receiver has.

Without a wired connection, the data transfer between the iPhone and receiver would have to happen via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi®, some combination of the two, or another wireless technology altogether. It seems Bluetooth alone would not be robust enough to transmit large amounts of data between the two devices. This is important so that the stereo can display maps in a timely fashion. That's one of the key benefits of using CarPlay. Bluetooth should work for displaying album artwork, incoming messages, playlists, and songs from an iPhone, but maps will likely require something a little stronger, like Wi-Fi.

If Wi-Fi is involved, then it would have to be built into the receiver. There are only a handful of receivers on the market with Wi-Fi capability right now, and they’re not exactly a bargain. It would be interesting to see what stereo manufacturers think consumers are willing to pay for that just to avoid plugging in their iPhones. On the plus side, Wi-Fi can be really fast if done correctly, which could be great news for audiophiles.
