Agreed, this feels like OpenAI had to spend some money or distract people from the fact that we are not anywhere near their AGI claims.

they’re just using available cash to get into hardware which is a more long-term stable set of assets, right? selling pickaxes and shovels?

I really like the idea of something like the Rabbit R1 but it is something that can be done on a phone much better and from what I last saw it wasn’t so reliable

it’d be nice to see a tightly integrated ai smart phone. the ability to prompt your apps to have custom features. change a theme ad hoc with just your voice. “make me an app for chorus.fm and give it dark mode with red borders”. open the sports app but only show me hockey. stuff like that. it’ll happen eventually, but google, microsoft and apple are dinosaurs

FYI if anyone ever has issues with their silicon MacBooks plugged into an external display where you get weird banding, or flashing checkerboard patterns on dark backgrounds (especially grays in dark mode), I just finally discovered that there is a known issue with silicon Macs and older display panel technology. Apple's default GPU dithering really screws things up.

Just installed BetterDisplay, turned GPU dithering off under color mode options, and everything looks great now plugged into my dual HP monitors. Was driving me nuts for months - it happens with my M3 and M4 MacBook Pros but never my Thinkpad or my old Intel MacBook.

These monitors aren't even old, either haha. I got them brand new earlier this year - HP 524pf 1080p 100hz monitors.

For the first time in like a year I needed to access something that specifically needed mac os and had to borrow my wife’s macbook. Cemented my love for the ipad only grind. I do really hope stage manager improves with this next ios update, but IMO in the next couple of years all the kids that grew up on iphones and ipads won’t even think to get a macbook. It felt strange to me to use it.

Also a month or so into the ipad pro and it’s been glorious. really didn’t anticipate loving the magic keyboard so much. having the ability to work from a monitor, but have the versatility to use it at home for literally everything else rules. It’s notably lighter for reading and the screen is unreal.

Anybody figured out how to get to all of your apps/services with the latest Apple TV update?

They fixed your brain when you were young.

Getting a new iPad for the first time in like... 8 years. I have an original iPad Pro. Anyone have strong opinions about newer iPads? thinking I might like to stay in the pro realm so I can get a 12 or 13 inch one. Primarily do drawing and TV watching while running on the treadmill with my iPads. So pro might be overkill, but drawing is part of my job, so having lots of real estate to do drawing at scale is definitely a nice to have.

You could save some money and go with a 13 inch air.

In the last year and a half I have had the mini 6, the M1 Air, and the 11 in M4 pro and use them daily. I loved the mini and if it had an M chip I would have been all in on it. Needed it to be able to take up a full monitor and have stage manager. The air (especially if you went for the 13) is overkill for what you are using it for and probably the best for most people. I use the M4 as a laptop replacement and love it so much. It is EXTREME overkill, but I loved it so much and would have a hard time going back. The oled display and pro motion are so nice. If you went for the M4 it would be a massive upgrade from your old iPad and it’ll be good as a primary iPad for many years. There are new M2 air’s on super sale still if you’re looking for a killer deal. IMO there’s no bad iPad option it just depends on what you are using it for / how much cash you have to burn.

Feel free to DM if you have specific questions, lol I can’t shut up in here about my iPad use.

I'm waiting to see what they do with the supposed UI updates but I feel like it'll be another year where I'm disappointed with iPad OS. But I did enjoy the handwritten notes while at a conference so maybe I could go with a mini or something instead of buying new notebooks.

It's the desperate attempt to try and get more Apple Arcade subs.

  20. That's basically how Apple Arcade already works, right? At least on Apple TV. I haven't opened it in forever. Adding some of Game Center's social features to that and having it as a pre-installed app on all devices seems like an obvious move.

I'd be better with actually making these OSes stable and delivering features on time.
