Upgraded from an S4 to an S10. Not a world of difference, but the quality difference is noticeable.

Is the m4 that much better than m3? Can m4 macbooks finally run two displays off a single usb c without the need of third party displaylink drivers?

Thinking of picking up a new Mac but the price difference between a 14 inch m3 and m4 is kind of insane.. $400 difference between the 1TB SSD 16GB RAM models

Oh woah, huge sale on M4 macbook pros on Amazon right now. $1589 for a 1TB 16GB model instead of $1799. Just pulled the trigger.

Just got my MacBook Pro m4 and loving it so far. This thing is smooth as butter

Also just relieving to upgrade from a 256GB SSD to 1TB. I'm so tired of deleting stuff any time I want to download something new. No noticeable difference from my M3 I use for work, but time will tell! Big upgrade over my personal MacBook Pro from 2014 haha

My company ordered me a 256 GB MacBook Air two years ago and it's a struggle. Once a week I get everything yelling at me about space being consumed. I just deleted a VM I used on rare occasion to get back 50 GB.

I've been tempted to partition my personal Air and boot into the system I need depending on te time of day as I have 1 TB there.

Oh, good, I was just checking the company's laptop policy and it's replacement every three years. I'm still here next October and I'll be able to pick my own device. I wanted to last time and they instead just sent me a device. Frustrated me, was going to get a M2 Air refurb for the budget I'm allotted.

I can struggle with 256 for another 18 months or so.

Anyone know how to make my Mac screen go to login screen when I open the lid or wake from sleep? For some reason it's going straight to my desktop. I only have to log in when first turning my laptop on

FileVault is on so it shouldn't be able to have automatic login...

sweet that was it! Thanks! My company policy at work already had that set up for me by default, didn't know I needed to manually set that

I'm hoping a restart of my Watch fixes this but fuck, I haven't been able to use it on cellar for a bit now. Music and Podcasts just crash or it kills the cellular connection.

Unsurprisingly, I've barely used my iPad in the last week or so. I really don't see much of a usecase outside of occasional handwritten notes and entertainment. I'll hang on to it until this supposed iOS 19 redesign but can't say it's going to stick around much longer.

what size do you have? for me picking up the new mini has been a game changer in my reading habits. my 13" pro gets a lot less use. I highly doubt MacOS is ever coming to iPad but would love a middle ground between iOS and MacOS, at least on the Pros.

I'm at a weird place with the iPad in general. Bought the 13" iPad Pro M1 back in 2020 with the hope they were finally gonna bring MacOS to it since the MBA was already out, and that never happened. I really enjoy the Magic Keyboard experience with it, but iPadOS still leaves a lot to be desired. In hindsight, I would've gotten way more use out of the M1 MacBook air since I was still using a 2013 MacBook Pro, and I should've bought the MBA and then an M1 iPad Air instead. Purchased a used M1 MBA in 2022, and it's the greatest laptop I've ever owned.

The main thing I enjoy about my M1 iPad Pro is the screen. It's the nicest display in our home (besides our iPhones of course), and its main use is entertainment.

I see this going one of three ways in the future:
1 - if the foldable iPhone becomes reality, I see myself replacing the iPad Pro with that for streaming video, and then I just have one device for phone and tablet.
2 - If the cheaper headset is released, that will definitely replace the iPad Pro, cause I was blown away by the Apple Vision Pro demo, but not at that price.
3 - Replace the M1 iPad Pro with an iPad Air once those get OLED displays, since I can't justify the price of another iPad Pro with its limited use case.

You summed it up for me. I like the experience of having a device that I can both dock and take with me in a flip case - I went to a whole conference and did this, docked at the hotel and took the iPad and pencil to the sessions, worked great - but the OS is so limiting these days that I can't stand using it. When even Viticci is realizing this and using more web apps over native apps - that's a sign.

I've done plenty of trips now without a large device, relying solely on my phone, and it's been just fine. I like a larger screen for reading and watching content on a plane but that's not enough of a reason to have an iPad when I have two MacBook Airs for work and personal use.

I would get an iPad Air if it wasn't obvious now that they're going to use it to bump sales while cutting costs. No backlight on the Magic Keyboard? Binned M3 SoCs? Meh.

I primarily use my laptop in clamshell mode so it's essentially a desktop 95% of the time. I've tried a few times to have an iPad Pro as my 'laptop' but as good as they have gotten over the years - I just find myself feeling limited. I finally decided to cut ties with that experiment. I got the M4 Mac mini a few months ago and it's the best computer I've ever had. More than enough for what my needs are. I had an 13" M4 iPad Pro as my laptop, but decided to sell it this week and for the amount of money I sold it for I was able to get the new 11" iPad Air and a refurbished M3 MacBook Air and only had to put down a little bit on top of the cash I made in the sale.

I finally feel like I have the set up I've wanted for years. A solid desktop for work, great laptop for travel, and a great iPad for consumption and notes. Took me too many tries, but I feel like I am finally there. lol

  18. I like the iPad more when I accepted what it's good at: watching stuff, reading things, browsing the internet.

And when I use it for that, it's great. Any other use case and I'd rather use my MacBook Air. But I was raised on using a computer, so I am pretty confident I'll always feel more at home on one.

I have an iPad almost exclusively to use as a second screen and for a media device when traveling, and I love it for that. Don’t need it to do anything else

I feel the same way. I've followed people like Federico and Chris Lawley for a long time and have always wanted to be someone who could utilize the iPad in ways they can, but when it comes down to it - I'm just more comfortable on a computer and was never willing to fully accept some of the crazy hoops you have to jump through to get things done on an iPad.

I like my iPad for digital note taking and have always used Goodnotes but about a month ago I started using Freeform and have gone all in. It's way more powerful than I ever thought it was and it's been perfect for how my brain works. I like when I'm talking to clients I can have all of my notes and random screenshots/txt all in one infinite canvas. It's incredible. Highly recommend people to try it out if they haven't yet.

I too have come to see that for some things the iPad is just too much for a compromise but I think people also are being unfairly reductive when they chalk it off as a consumption device. At this point in life I don’t do a lot of office or hardcore computer work like presentations or whatever else people do on desktops. But I still find the iPad wildly more efficient and fun as a productivity device for those medium-weight tasks that take the most time like sorting or creating to do lists, note taking (academic stuff, travel planning, making lists), mild photo editing, internet-based tasks (applications, emails), to say nothing of the ease of pulling out Music or Messages in slide-over compared to managing windows across 1-2 screens.

Since for some use cases they are too much of a compromise, I do think iPads are too expensive for what they are, I do think they’d benefit from some OS changes, but I still think they’re very strong productivity devices that fit in nicely in most peoples’ day to day routines.

Anybody ever have an issue where you’re streaming a particular song in Apple Music and it gets to a certain part of the song and just skips to the next track automatically? And it happens at the same exact part every single time on this specific song? But the weirdest part is if I pause right before it skips and fast forward like 4 seconds the song will resume

If it was crossplatform I'd use it more but I also get that's not Apple's MO.
