I feel like it would be a good week for apple to go 3 days in a row with announcements (iPad Air, air tags, MacBook Air). I have a new Mac mini which I love and an iPad Pro as my 'laptop' but I'd be lying if I wasn't thinking of snagging an M2 MacBook Air that people will start to offload for cheap with the announcement of the new MacBook airs this week

 

M3 MacBook Air is the best laptop I've ever owned. I've only had Pros before this, and I'm consistently shocked how much this can do in a way smaller (and cheaper) profile.

 

M1 Air is still my favorite. Love the tapered design, it's still a total workhorse.

The pricing structure for the new Airs means that the equivalent configuration to my M3 is $400 cheaper this year than last

 

The Airs are nice. I'm happy with my M1, though. I just need to stop using my work laptop since they only gave me 256 GB on it and I routinely fill it.

 

Them saying the M4 is only 2x faster than M1 really doesn't encourage me to upgrade.

I don’t really follow laptops anymore since I rarely use any type of traditional computer… but why does it seem like they upgrade the MacBooks every year now?

 

There's a bunch of sickos out there who buy the new model every year.

I think really though with the advent of their own chips they aren't beholden to Intel's (or any hardware company's) release schedule any more. Couple that with the sickos and you get the incentive to release as many sand-filled aluminum boxes as possible.

 

That is the answer. If you recall the days of PowerPC there'd be updates more frequently than even with Intel. It was at the end, though, when IBM couldn't make a G5 that could go in a PowerBook.

This seems more like the cadence that Apple wants to work on. It also makes sense to keep releasing new M-series SoCs as they're releasing new A-series SoCs every year in the iPhone. They're linked so when it makes sense to keep using a manufacturing process, they go for it. Not like they have to supply anyone else but themselves, the only thing holding them back is TSMC's capacity and Apple at one point owned all of their 3nm capacity.

 

new m3 ultra can accommodate 512gb of ram. some might say the new extreme is too extreme!
