Do you need formatting and all that? For just basic ass Word like stuff, Pages is totally usable in my opinion. For writing - text and just text - I love Ulysses.
This would be my answer. If you want something for writing - Ulysses is still great. If it's notetaking or otherwise - just use Notes.
Claude took an idea I had for my animal rescue website and knocked it out in no time compared to if I had to do it myself. I figured if I'm replacing myself somehow, it's a tool. But if my 30 page document I knocked out with its help by giving it my notes, transcripts, and everything works out - I'm convinced at least as a tool.
I just got to thr ATP episode where Marco talks about spending 20k+ a year on this Mac Mini fleet for transcripts!?! What? I don’t think I’ve ever used a transcript for a podcast in my life. Or wanted to?
I actually use transcripts a lot. For searching for something to copy/paste for posts, etc. For instance, Colin Frangicetto was on a podcast last year and I didn't want to listen to all the stuff about This Day Forward, I just searched "circa" to find those parts.
Yes, and he also said by the end of that segment that this will likely be a one-and-done, as in by the time those M4's need replacement, we'll have that level of transcription power in our phones. The whole story behind this really interested me. I'm impressed with the work he put into it, and I think it'll be worth it. Since I haven't experienced it before, I've started using it in a few podcasts, and it's already coming in handy. Not having to rewind just to hear the last paragraph again and a quick glance to catch back up is cool.
We have a pilot row of cubicles with high DPI ultra wide curved Dell monitors with a Thunderbolt cable built right in with no need for a dock, and I've gotta say, it's pretty great. Didn't even know MacOS supported split screen snapping to the sides. Only downside is sharing my screen on Teams and everything being tiny. Not sure if that's worth the trade off to me.
Just traded in my 11" iPad Air for a MacBook Neo. I wanted to do some personal writing and other stuff on the iPad and after a few months... I just really can't deal with iPadOS. This Neo feels damn nice for like $300 after the trade in (got the TouchID model).
Even some of the iPad Stans who do tons of reviews and have totally committed to iPad YouTube videos are saying “get a Neo.” I’m sticking with the M4 iPad Pro, but had the Neo come out prior to full committing a couple of years ago I definitely would have gone that route. I took my iPad on a trip a couple weeks ago and I think I need to just take it from the Magic Keyboard in my folio every day when I get done with work. I bought it to be an all in one and it really is effective for that. I do think the move is getting a Neo and either the base iPad or a mini for the vast majority of people.
Awful news. I want a prominent "vibe-coded" banner for every app that uses those tools. I've used enough vibe-coded utilities recently to know how shitty they can be, so yes, a huge placement of "AI CODED BULLSHIT" should be front and center. I was hoping that since Apple is already so strict about App Store submissions to the point that they've eradicated entire app categories, they'd at least put up some "protecting consumer" PR garbage against this, but of course they just want that sweet 30% fee, never mind that the app could possibly not function properly or have serious security issues within it.
Anyone bought one of those modded/restored iPod classics? I'm having some nostalgia for listening to music on a non-touch screen device that isn't connected to the internet. Everything is either a fully touch screen androidOS device or a bad imitation of the iPod or cassette player, so I'd rather just go for the "real" thing.
Nope but I do miss my first gen iPod Video! That thing was great. Though it was annoying when I finally moved away from it and realized that getting an Alpine deck in my car with a proprietary 30 pin cable instead of an aux cord wasn't a very future proofed decision
I still have a couple iPod classics. Wish I had the knowledge to mod them myself. They still work but the batteries are gone; they need to be constantly plugged in.
I am in the middle of restoring an older iPod classic 5th generation. It's not TOO difficult, and there are parts available online. Modding it to include 500GB and a much bigger battery. It's been a fun project so far! I've also had experience with the HiFi Walker H2 player with Rockbox installed on it, definitely worth a look if you want a dedicated music device without a touchscreen/android on it.
I finally switched back to Bear a couple weeks ago for all my notes after learning that the web version was in public beta (necessary for when I want to use it at work bc Windows) and I am so happy. It’s such a nice app.
I still wish it handled the Apple Pencil in a better way. I don't like having to create a drawing canvas.
Y'know, the thought just crossed my mind of "how did iPods not fail left and right using a spinning disk drive while we tossed these things around or jostled them in our pockets"? Apparently as soon as you picked a playlist or whatever, iPods immediately would cache as many songs as possible to system memory and then spin the drive down. Pretty cool. Had no idea that's how it worked.
