  1. Well it’s an opt-in from the parents so it’s up to them if they want to by-pass that

Yeah the very concept still makes me super uncomfortable. Sure it’s opt-in only for now, but how much pressure does the government (not just in the US but in other countries in particular where govts are more authoritarian and Apple’s resistance is, for whatever reason, a bit lower) have to put on Apple and their peers to make this kind of thing mandatory in the future? Apple has typically been very good about pushing back on governments trying to access people’s personal phone data, but how long can any company ultimately hold out? The basic mindset of all law enforcement agencies is that if you have data that may be of use to them, they want it and will go to almost any lengths to get it. The worry in particular is when it comes to kids the ‘but you want to protect children, don’t you?’ proposition becomes very hard to resist, and once you let law enforcement in behind that privacy wall it’s game over, they’ll find a way to get everything.

"What happens, for example, if China demands that it provide its own database of image fingerprints for use with this system — a database that would likely include images related to political dissent. Tank man, say, or any of the remarkable litany of comparisons showing the striking resemblance of Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh.

This slippery-slope argument is a legitimate concern. Apple’s response is simply that they’ll refuse."

    - Apple’s New ‘Child Safety’ Initiatives, and the Slippery Slope

going out on a limb here and say that this sentence legitimises the concerns in my eyes.

Yeah still can’t decide where I land on this one either. And I know Apple will dismiss any of the wider political dissent concern as “well, this is just to protect children”. But Apple sells devices in countries where anti-LGBTQ+ laws exist to “protect the children”.

Is it really far-fetched to envision a scenario where a government spies on the photos of a same-sex couple and seizes their kids “for their own protection”?

The problem is: now that there's a method to check files that should have been protected by end to end encryption, there's no way to put the toothpaste back into the tube.

Like it's fucking hard to be the guy that argues against child porn safeguards, but I do think, to a certain extent, this is a bit shortsighted.

I'm hoping that a lot smarter people than me have though this through a lot more thoroughly than I am able to because at the end of the day I have no choice but to trust Apple on this one. I'll make sure to continue having more sensitive conversations over Signal though.

they still buried way too many options under the overflow (•••) menu.

the new design is great and will make everybody equally happy.
