If you're going to proofread a lot I might even say not only to get the Pro, but opt for the 12 inch.

I have the 10.9 and really good eyes and it's a strain. You can't buy more screen real estate either. I'm with @mescalineeyes .

Yeah, my thought was if I went with the Pro, I'd go all the way with the larger screen

I’d say decide on the size first and then go either 12.9 in Pro or the Air.

I’m thinking about getting AirPods. Is the wireless charging case worth the extra $40?

As someone who charges their phone on a wireless pad 90% of the time, I got super annoyed with plugging in my AirPods case just to charge it. With the wireless case, I hardly think about it anymore and my case isn't dead all the time. I bought it for convenience. It all comes down to your personal charging habits. I'll more than likely never plug in my AirPods case again, but everyone is different.

If you're wanting to jump on the sale for the standard model, I'd say go for it. $120 is a good price.

This is me. I bought a 2017 12.9" Pro and loved it. Felt like I got a solid 4 years of use out of it (never bought the 1st pencil cause of the dumb lightning port charging method). I did have some FOMO when the 2018 redesign came out, but I held out three more years for the 2021 model with M1 and the mini-LED display. Purchased the Magic Keyboard for this one, and also planning on the Pencil at some point. Splurged on the cellular model, but not sure i'll ever use it. I won't be upgrading again until 2025 or so (only way I'll break that self-promise is an OLED model, as I still love OLED displays most).

  13. Had a pretty shitty Apple support experience. Basically, I was misled to believe I only had 30-60 days (don't remember which one, I was jerked around on the phone for like a week when this happened) to add AppleCare to the 13 inch MBP (maxed out specs) I bought last June. Anyway, fast forward a few months and I manage to spill a tiny bit of soda on my keyboard. What is interesting to note here is that aside from a few sticky keys my computer worked perfectly for like 3 more months before I brought it in (it still worked, I just got anxious since I need this computer for school etc).

Now, when I finally brought it to Apple I obviously was prepared to pay the exorbitant $1300 they charge for these repairs. However, the Genius Bar guy pretty much told me that I actually had a YEAR to add AppleCare to the device, leaving me only a month outside that window. He also mentioned that the repair charge is so high because usually liquid damage requires replacement of the Logic board. That's why they wipe your data. He also mentioned that in some rare cases they don't need to do this. He said that in that case, I should be able to get a discount considering they only had to replace topcase/keyboard assembly. He also did get initial permission to throw me a discount of the price of AppleCare off what the repair was, so I did manage to save 200 bucks. That was definitely nice and I walked out that day feeling kind of burned over the whole AppleCare thing but I still felt satisfied.

Now, fast forward to me picking up my computer yesterday. First, the lady took a legit half an hour to get my MacBook from the back. Sure, no big deal, I can wait, right? When I finally get my computer I noticed a pretty decent sized scratch on the top of the computer (literally the part they were not at all supposed to touch). It literally looks like they took a knife to the edge of the computer. Not a huge deal either but I was pissed because they damaged the computer I've now put $4300 into. Eventually I talked to a manager, who was a real dick. He was super defensive basically telling me "what do you want me to do about this?" and initially challenged me that the scratch was my fault. He also told me that they couldn't discount based on the repair, but when I pressed him to find out what the cost would have been for a topcase/keyboard replacement he refused to call corporate (in the past calling corporate has been standard practice for issues in the store), and also wouldn't let me access the data on my OWN REPAIR (so, I don't even know what they technically did to my computer, but my data not being wiped is enough to proove a lack of any serious component replacement). Finally, all he could do on the scratch was offer a free repair (only after I , but they didn't have the part in stock and he wanted me to leave it with them yadayadayada. Fuck that. Dude also made a sarcastic comment about it somehow being MY fault that 4-5 other employees were lined up to ask him stuff. Like, dude...

Whatever, I'm honestly not even sure I have the energy to call Apple and press them further about this but I'm pissed. I feel like Apple used to have great customer service but now you go into the store and you're just bounced back and forth between different employees that have to find a manager for like every possible inquiry that's not making a purchase. I don't even know what I wanted to get out of this but it sucks that Apple doesn't even train their employees well enough to give me consistent information about company policy, and if they had done so I would have had AppleCare on my computer months ago and this whole situation would have cost a fraction of what it did. I don't know. Am I in the wrong here or did they fuck me over?

you are not in the wrong, sounds like you just “lucked” into a shitty manager. Sleep off the initial anger and then press apple further once you’ve cooled off a bit.

it was buried because it had pull to refresh, but that's not really practical for most websites. sometimes designers make mistakes and this was definitely one of them.

I recently updated to Monterey on my new M1 work Mac and so far I'm loving it. The combination of the two is making the OS just feel so snappy.

Also liking the new tab groups in Safari.

  23. Same. I need to do way more research before I can speak even half intelligent about this. Thought Casey Newton and the EFF both had well argued takes. And it seems pretty clear something has to happen, due to legal issues across the world, but I don't know enough yet to talk about it more than that.

  24. It just feels a little sad/disappointing being super excited for Apple to be all in on end-to-end encryption for them to make a change like this.
