Those reviews feel a little inconsistent. How can it be both self-contained and not setting up future films while also being two hours of multiverse talk that would deter MCU novices?

There have been other reactions stating that the script is a highlight. I’ll lean my hope towards that especially due to this guy writing Kang Dynasty. If the story sucks here….not good.

I love these movies too and, just like a lot of people, have devoted a ton of time to seeing them all, but I really struggle seeing them as high art.

Beautifully strange & mysterious? Like Iron Man telling that kid not to be a pussy in Iron Man 3?

    come on lol

Reviews are now out. Currently a 63% on RT and 53 on metacritic, which is a bit low for MCU standards.

I've been reading/hearing a lot of 'its fine' so that score makes a lot of sense.

That score seems to be about what my expectations are after the majority of Phase 4.

2nd MCU to be rotten on RT now. The last few MCU films have really been duds for me. No Way Home was the last one I enjoyed. I’ll still be seeing this opening day, though.

Yeah even the YouTube reviewers who are usually over the moon about everything Marvel puts out are walking away from this like “ehhhhhh this doesn’t bode well…”

Sounds like it was something good on paper but with a not-so-favorable execution. Marvel also seems to be having a tough time with finding the middle-ground between "setting things up" and being "self-contained" as most of their phase 4 attempts at both have received the cry of fans that disliked one and wanted the other.

Still will be seeing this tonight or on Friday. It's been several months since I was in a theater.

I just needed a break tbh. They should have taken like 3-4 years off before revving the story back up. Instead we got 2 years ish iirc, and it’s not like they eased back into it….we got 9!!! MCU projects in 2021. And ironically a lot of them have been the best parts of Phase 4. But 9 in one year is insane! I was appreciative of it due to covid and needing more content to consume but, looking back, I was definitely burnt out a bit by the time we got Shang Chi and No Way Home.

I just think I might have liked some of these more if I wasn’t so worn down by it all. I still haven’t had a chance to watch Moonknight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Werewolf by Night (not even sure I’m going to watch this tbh, literally never heard of it), or BP2. And it’s hard to find the motivation to do so outside of BP2.

Out of the things you haven't seen yet, I'd honestly rank them from best to worst, Werewolf By Night, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Black Panther 2. BP2 was fine, She-Hulk is a relatively light/easy watch, the other 3 are solid all the way through.

The good news is that Feige said Marvel will slow down their releases and space them out (for Disney Plus). 2021 had a lot but that was partially due to Covid. Marvel ended up with many projects that needed to be released after numerous delays.

Did you enjoy Shang-Chi and No Way Home?

As for the shows, I'd say to just do a YouTube recap. If you like the characters once they appear in films you can watch the shows on Disney+ (Ms Marvel will be the first you can do this with after the release of The Marvels). That way you can be slightly interested going in.

Also, Werewolf By Night is both the best, and the shortest runtime of the ones you mentioned.

Just got out of the theater.

This is certainly not a 50%, low 70s, sure. Really don’t know if the critics and I watched a different cut. It’s my least favorite Ant-Man, however.

The movie ends abruptly and a portion of the dialogue is just awful, but the story itself is simple and entertaining. The look and feel reminded me of the worlds Lucas explored in the Star Wars prequels, which I quite liked despite it being a CGI fest and Kang’s introduction was done well ~ really brought the fear into everyone who knew him.

Kang is probably THE most intimidating villain thus far and Majors is incredibly convincing. MODOK was….MODOK. What I expected.

Also, was not expecting Scott to get the living shit beat out of once Kang starts to fist-fight him. I‘m pretty sure Scott only landed one punch and is just crying out in pain the rest of the fight. It’s pretty intense.

Looking forward to the inevitable Shang-Chi vs Kang hand-to-hand

Excited to see this after work tonight. I read a lot of the reviews and the main complaint seems to be that the humor is forced, too much CGI, and a bad wig on Michelle.

I mean, that’s par for a Marvel movie lately.

That's not how Rotten Tomatoes works, it just means 51% of critics gave it a "positive" review. (It's one of the platform's flaws).

There's usually an average score as well but I can't find it. Notably most MCU movies get 80-90% "Fresh" reviews but often end with an average score in the 7s.

this one has an average score of 5.7 which is low for the MCU
