Just watched this for the first time last night, and I really didn't care for it, and I think that's down to me "not getting it". Any good website out there with a thorough write-up of what happened and what it all means?? I loved movies like Sunshine and Arrival, so I thought this would be up there, but it just didn't click. Made a remark to my Dad on how I thought what we saw was what being on LSD must be like, or something, haha

I don’t have any write ups but this is one of my favorite movies of the last few years. The themes of self destruction both natural and self inflicted really resonated with me. Also the lighthouse scene was insane in theaters.

The bear is one of the most terrifying things I've seen in the last few years.

As dope as this is I’d also like to see an actual adaptation of the book

I don’t think a movie could adequately convey exactly how creepy the book is. It’s the kind of cosmic horror that works best on the page because you can build the scenes in your own mind. I appreciated that the movie didn’t try to do a direct adaptation and instead did its own thing with the same general premise.

Yeah this was one of my favorites last year. Loved the cast too. Don’t think I’ve seen Portman in horror before.

I just saw a tweet about how FrozenII is essentially this in animated form, specifically when they go into the mist. Guess I should check this out.

Was that bear that killed the two, already living in the area when the Shimmer overtook the area? Was the bear genetically manipulated by the Shimmer to transform and go crazy?

And what did the whole "refract" bit mean, or refer to?

Light gets refracted when you view something through glass or water and the image gets distorted. In the case of the movie, the shimmer refracted DNA and caused distortions in the cells which led to changes in the plants, animals, and humans that were within it. For example, the plants taking the shape of humans because the change in their genetic makeup altered they way they grew.

Yep! Either that, or it was outside of the area and migrated to there.

Also I think this is on par with Midsommar/Heriditary/The Witch and all the great horror films of the last few years but doesn't get talked about nearly as much.
