I read the manga as it was being released in middle school. Waiting for the next volume to come out was a cool experience.
I like bleak and cynical things haha. I think he just gets worse as the show goes on and I find that kind of thing endlessly facisnating and entertaining. Breaking Bad is my favourite TV show and they kind of explore similar ideas.
My first experience with Death Note was stumbling upon the tail end of an episode at like 2am in when I was in 7th grade and it just happened to be the episode that ends with a girl walking to her suicide. My one thought was "wow, that's fucking depressing" and then didn't actually watch any more of it until years later. I enjoyed it enough.
I don't mind that kind of stuff when there's something to balance it out. Like Psycho-Pass I think can get very dark but there are still moments of levity and the protagonists are likeable people. But as another example, I remember trying to get into Black Mirror and Episode 2 of Season 1 is maybe the bleakest thing I've ever seen. I watched the next episode and noped out after. I still think about that episode sometimes. It haunts me.
Yeah I love Black Mirror too, especially the earlier episodes, ha. Episode 3 of the first season is always the one that stuck with me the most and it's probably one of my favourite episodes of tv ever.
https://forum.chorus.fm/posts/6073638 On the heels of this post, yesterday I was thinking to myself how Monogatari is the anime I most want to recommend to everyone that I can recommend to absolutely no one.
Seriously you guys, just go look at some of the bland mix of stuff this season on Crunchyroll and you'll find some truly average stuff that's pretty great
Me with Ergo Proxy and Steins Gate. Two of my favorites but I have the absolute hardest time actually recommending them to people
Steins;Gate is another tricky one to recommend because you basically have to tell people to stick around until the halfway point before making up their mind about it instead of watching only the first couple episodes and deciding "this isn't for me"
Steins;gate is one of my favorites. I always heard it starts really slow but i loved it right away, i liked them all just hanging out before shit started to get gnarly
The problem with Monogatari is that when it's interesting, it's really interesting, and it's weird and funny and has a great concept and cool, complex characters, but unfortunately it is also extremely anime, and has many problematic elements that would be hard to parse in a normal social context. It's not for nothing that Kaiki has to at one point pause and consider if Araragi is a criminal.
I watched anime religiously every season until about 2019/2020. Recently, I started rewatching old favorites such as YYH and DBZ after Toriyama's death. The genres I typically stick to are mech and horror. A friend of mine moved in a few months ago and finally got me to watch Demon Slayer after begging me to watch anime again. I can see why it's been a cultural hit since I stopped watching. I'm up to the Swordsmith Arc and really impressed by how much I enjoy the characters.
Currently at a RADWIMPS show. Waiting for the band to come out. Stoked to hear some songs from Your Name, Weathering With You, and Suzume
On Season 2 of Tonikawa and even though Nasa and Tsukasa are fun to watch, Aya is low key becoming my favorite character. The way everything comes out of her mouth like it's the most profound thing in the universe no matter how ditzy is a running gag I will not get tired of.
Just a heads up for MHA fans that it is extremely likely we are in the single digits for how many chapters of the manga are left. So be wary out there if you’re anime only.
Just a warning that the next several arcs are generally considered a considerable dip in quality mainly in terms of how much they get dragged out, even by OP standards. Assuming you’re watching the anime, you may want to consider the switching to the manga as it’s about 10x faster to get through lol
For me, it’s just Fisman Island that was just ok. Return to Sabody and Post-War were good, Dresrossa was good but dragged, and everything after was s-tier.
I’d barely consider Return an arc, it might as well be just a little goofy intro before Fishman Island, which I think is definitely the weakest post-time skip arc Punk Hazard is good but drags. Dressrosa is great but drags so much more, I’d honestly recommend anyone read the manga for that one instead because it gets so bad, it’s rough Zhou is good and its brevity is like a breath of fresh air after Dressrosa Aside from the Katakuri fight, WCI doesn’t really feel like it drags despite being much longer than Dressrosa. And same with Wano — even though it should have been much shorter, I never felt all that impatient sitting through it. I think maybe because it’s split up into Acts, and each act kinda feels like its own distinct thing
I get it. I read the manga from chapter one to Egghead without seeing a single episode. I started watching the anime too once Egghead started cause I like the new animation style. But wow, if I was only watching the anime, I’d feel bored. I know Joe is loving it and I’m not trying to take away his enjoyment, but I also prefer reading over tv in general. Also, I’m glad you mentioned Zou…it has one of my favorite moments in all fiction. You probably know what it is. I got chills.
