I’d say manga talk goes in here.

I’m reading Solo Leveling now. It’s light reading, but fun. There’s an anime of it next year!

I'm reading so much magna right now. Ive read more manga in the past month than I've ever read anything in my entire life. Basically I'm going through the isekai tag on an app and just plowing through a ton of them.

Most are incredibly bland and exactly the same, but sometimes there are some good ones.

I also go through workplace romances or slice of life but those tags are huge so it's hard to get through them haha

I don't really read manga, but there are a couple where I've seen the anime and checked out the manga just to see how it ends, like Nisekoi and Sankarea.

And because I hate myself, sometimes I go seeking the latest entry of Rent-A-Girlfriend to see if it's any closer to an actual resolution.

My favourite manga right now is Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku (Mangadex has the English title as "The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity" these days). Really cute and wholesome slice of life romance, highly recommend to anyone who likes that kind of stuff. Hope it gets an anime at some point.

I’ve been reading manga nonstop for the past few years. Attack on Titan, 20th Century Boys, One Piece. Asadora!, and a bunch more.

also, check out Rooster Fighter and thank me later

Rent A Girlfriend will never end and even if by some miracle it does, no one will be happy with the results

I mean, if they just get together officially, I'll be pretty satisfied with that, as it's the only possible way this has a happy ending.

If it ends in literally any other way, it'll be my start of darkness.

oh manga talk? i read way too much manga. im reading give or take 50 series at any given moment. though i am caught up with many of them (including the entire weekly jump mag) and some release very slowly. aside from more well know series some of my recommendations rn are:

hikaru ga shina natsu (the summer hikaru died): a very creepy horror series set in a small village. yoshiki's (the mc) best friend hikaru goes missing, he eventually returns but yoshiki realizes that the hikaru that came back is not actually him and isn't even human. really cool horror setpeices as well as some yaoi elements as the relationship between the two characters is somewhat romantic.

chi - chikyuu no undou ni tsuite (about the movements of the earth): the latest grand prize winner of the tezuka prize, which by some miracle is actually fully translated. a historical series that follows the stuggles of 15th century astronomists in poland as they aim to prove a geocentric model of the universe despite the church's crackdown on heretic ideas. takes place over a broad time periods and connects the efforts of different people in their pursuit of "truth".

yomi no tsugai (daemons of the shadow realm): not exactly unknown but have seen very little discussion surrounding this series. the latest from hiromu arawaka (fullmetal alchemist, silver spoon) one of the greatest shonen mangaka of all time. her expertise in the genre is in full display here telling a compelling story with characters full of humor and personality, an interesting battle mechanic revolving around "summons" called tsugai with unique characteristics and abilities. its fairly new but there's already many seeds planted for a story that unravels with twists and turns. just masterful stuff and im shocked i havent seen more discussion around it.

sentai daishikakku (go go loser ranger): the latest from the mangaka behind the quintessential quintuplets (which wasnt for me). ive seen this one be described as the boys but with power rangers, i havent seen the boys but from what i gather it seems like a fair comparison. great art and cool abilities. this one's getting an anime sometime next year so keep an eye out for it.

fool night: a dystopian series about a future where its constantly nighttime, to combat the lack of photosynthesis people can volunteer to end their lifes by becoming plants themselves. a young boy in debt undergoes the procedure for the money, and gains the ability to hear the thoughts of the once human plants. he uses this ability and his last remaining years to help those who have grievances with the departed and in the latest developments, solve a murder mystery.

hoshi tuskai selena: a beuatifully drawn fantasy adventure series about a girl who searches for little creatures called star beasts to free her village from a curse. each star beast has a neat little ability (such as turning things small or camouflage things) that influence its story. unfortunately only the first 4 chapters are translated and the team translating them has dropped it since they said its been licensed, but so far i havent seen anything about it being licensed in english but its probably only a matter of time. very eager to see where this goes.

akane banashi: jump's best new series from this year. follows the very likeable akane as she takes on the world of rakugo, a kind of traditional one man show/storytelling art form (those familair with descending stories should know that it is), while trying to find answers (and revenge!) for her father's abrupt expulsion from the rakugo world. a really solid shonen art style that skillfully switches from modern to a more vintage japanese art style during the rakugo segements. the volumes in japan have come with recommendations from icons like eiichiro oda and hideaki anno.

ao no hako (blue box): last one i'll recommend is one that i dont particularly love but i feel it lines up with the tastes of some users here. blue box is a romance/sports series about a middling badminton player who falls in love with the star of the girl's basketball team, while being involved in a love triangle. the blossoming romance also pushes them to become better at their respective sports. i personally find shone romance (particularly jump romance) to be infuriating, but i know some people really like this genre. the art is always great and it does have moments of maturity without ever turning into fan service. its been really well received in japan so an anime should be a matter of time.

I absolutely don't remember the names of any manga I read, even the ones I like. I need to go back and check them all.

Going to start watching Life With An Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into A Total Fantasy Knockout, and this quote I found from the creator is sending me.

Oh man some of you dweebs were still going on about the Chainsaw Man CGI huh. There's a video discussing CGI in anime that's a fun watch, it's a bit lengthy but pretty worthwhile

Anyway, loved that episode ending. Anything to do with the trio of Denji, Power and Aki is top tier.

I just find CG ugly in general, it's not my thing. I think it looks especially ugly when combined with traditional animation, which is very much my thing. I understand why it's used, but watching some dork tell me why I should like it for 40 minutes isn't gona change anything.

Bocchi is the only anime that should be allowed to use obvious CGI

I think my biggest issue with the chainsaw man finale is just feeling nothing for Katana Man or Hoodie Girl. Like we've spent no time with them. My favorite parts of the show are just the good guys goofing off, going to bars, talking shit, eating puke. The fight scenes have been pretty boring.

i have not seen the last episode yet but im also somewhat surprised at how much backlash there is here over the cgi. it looks great compared to industry standard and most of the fights are directed in a way to minimize the impact of the cgi, aside from the first episode i barely noticed it.

i will say the complain around katana man and the snake devil girl makes more sense to me. i dont dislike them but its so strange that they only did 12 episodes and left it there. the villains in the next arcs are so much more compelling and i always felt these arcs where mostly introductory. i understand how someone who hasnt read the manga would be a bit puzzled as to why this was so anticipated. not to say those arcs are bad but they are largely not the reason this series has the reputation it does.

Yea, as cliche as it is to say things really do pop off past this. I didn't get REALLY invested until later on, although the best trio helped get me early on. It is interesting they didn't start with a 2 cour series from the get go for this, but then again Mappa does literally everything now so maybe it was a result of being stretched thin. Obviously they're doing another cour as teased by the ending of this episode, but it'll be a bit longer of a wait.

from what i gather the intention was to do two cours right off the bat but mappa ran out of time. seems like they have some of it ready given the reze teaser and the fact that they marketed it as a first cour rather than just season 1. ive seen a rumor that says 2024 but id be surprised if that was the case.

So it's one thing if CGI just isn't your thing, honestly that's a shame because there are tons of examples of CGI done well which includes Chainsaw Man but whatever people have their likes and dislikes. It's another to instantly say they chose to use CGI to cut down on time and money, when pretty much everything about the adaptation, from the OP, the EDs, the camera shots, the new points of view of characters in scenes, show there is a deliberate decision and reasoning for how they are adapting. And it's frankly disingenuous to say they just wanted to save on time and money with the decision. It's one of the biggest manga-to-anime properties in recent memory, by one of the biggest anime studios in the game. They aren't just going to go "oh fuck it let's just throw together some CGI and call it a day."
