How new? Like have you seen Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion? Get those out of the way before newer series make you unable to appreciate how great they were in their time (and how great they still are). edit: You just said that was the only one you've seen. I can't read. Yeah, watch those.
The show that truly sold me on anime. I'd been watching Naruto and One Piece and Bleach as you do when you're 14 and just getting into anime at that time, suddenly fucking bam best show 10/10 BEST SHOW Although I will still say that in terms of manga, One Piece is heads and shoulders above 99% of shounen - the anime, not so much.
I've never really got into Naruto/OP/Bleach, Dragon Ball Z was my kids show, ha. That and Shaman King. Hunter x Hunter is my favorite shounen show though and probably my second favourite anime ever after GL.
Don't bother with Naruto or Bleach. Bleach starts out well then turns to trash about halfway through - every fight becomes literally who shows their ULTIMATE SECRET POWER second. That's it. Look at this guy's power. Oh look at this guy's power. Oh okay fight's over. Also there's about as much text and content in about 5-6 chapters of Bleach as there is in just a single chapter of HxH... it's so goddamned slow. Totally not worth unless you'd been watching/reading since the start really. Naruto starts out well, gets pretty boring at a certain point, then picks up again near the end. It's decent but not essential watching/reading. One Piece tho, mangawise, I have nothing but love for. Full of action, strong plot from a simple premise, fantastic and ridiculously diverse cast of characters, and nothing is forgotten. Events that happened about 400 chapters prior still affect the plot - the interlinking of the world is fantastic, whereas Bleach can't even remember a goddamned castle design from even 40-50 chapters prior. That's another diss on Bleach, actually, the author just straight up forgets about things. There's one scene where a character unleashes his SUPER SECRET POWER, it gets a two page spread and a whole chapter of build-up... after that you don't see him again for a good maybe 70 chapters or so, at least. Bleh. TL;DR OP is great don't bother with the other two unless you were already reading them. Side note - Fairy Tail is pure dogshit and I hope it ends soon. Still reading it out of the "oh I started it I should finish it at least" mindset.
Yeah, I don't really plan on watching any of them, ha. I would kill for more Hunter x Hunter though. I want that more than most things in life.
Yeah watching any of them would be a fucking slog right now hah. I started when all of them were either sub-100 or 200 episodes. I tend to prefer to read manga nowadays anyway. I'd recommend reading One Piece if you were ever interested. Much easier and quicker to read at your own pace than watch an episode for 20 minutes apiece. Oh christ I just remembered Naruto's almost 100 episodes of filler because the anime caught up way too fucking quick. That's what initially prompted me to start reading manga instead in the first place hah.
I still need to finish that. I've seen like five episodes and I was loving it but I forgot about it, ha.
ANN's Answerman recently wrote a piece on recommending anime that functions as a sort of "how to" guide. I appreciate him spelling out the obvious but useful distinction between anime that are "good" and anime that are likely to be enjoyed by the person you're recommending stuff too. I have to actively prevent myself from recommending my favourites to everyone, regardless of their tastes and experience level. And it takes even more effort to recommend anime that I consider bad (like SAO and Tokyo Ghoul), but I think a healthy dose of detachment is called for. Either one is probably a safe bet. I would also add that the creator of Aldnoah.Zero is a well-liked writer named Gen Urobuchi. Urobuchi is behind a bunch of other series, including Psycho-Pass, Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica, and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.
What do you think is bad about Tokyo ghoul? I liked the first season a lot, at least. I can't argue with SAO however, that show went downhill very fast
I haven't watched a lot of anime, except some Ghibli movies and the mainstream stuff that was on TV when I was a kid, mostly because I find it a difficult thing to get into if you do not know what to look for. Anyway, I have recently gotten into Food Wars because someone recommended it to me, and I think it's hilarious. Any recommendations based on that?
