Is anyone watching season 3 of Love is War? It’s currently the highest rated show on myanimelist. I couldn’t get into the first season, maybe I should give it another shot

I tried the first episode because of the praise, but the premise was just silly to me. Is admitting your feeling towards someone before the other person does it really a show of weakness in the upper class in Japan? I don’t get it lol

On the one hand, I have come to understand that social norms are very different in Japan. Certain things hold more weight and have more connotation than they would here.

On the other hand, you're really taking the premise way too seriously. The whole point is how stupid it is. The hilarity is watching them play out their ridiculous chess game, and the heart is in the moments they drop the facade.

kaguyas premise is obvously not meant to be a realistic depiction of japanese high school romance. it does however lend itself to a more humorous and less trite take on the romance genre. the idea is theyre such competitive people that despite being highly intelligent theyve developed a boneheaded view on romance. i really dont see how the unplausibility of the premise can be a dealbreaker. anyways its a very good show.

On a third hand, I totally got into anime to watch some ridiculous shit, and so I'll sign up for whatever batshit premise you want to throw at me.

Look I get this is very much not the point of Spy x Family, but there has to be an easier way for Loid to find and kill that guy. Like literally just become an employee at the school yourself dude

Finished Tokyo Revengers, now watching the little chibi shorts and I like how even though they're still funny little asides, they do appear to be canon to the series, showing minor details that weren't touched upon in the main show.

Unfortunately, the version I'm watching has a really terrible translation, so the dialogue is only good enough to give me the broad strokes. It's fine though.

What a cliffhanger to end on though. I've spoiled myself on some future events and I really hope they get to do a full adaptation of this, cause it seems like a really wild ride.

Next, I think I'll finally watch My Love Story. The clips I've seen of it make it seem very light and fluffy, and that might be what I need right now.

This is the greatest fucking thing in the history of mankind.

    YOHANE DESCENDS

Basically it reimagines the cast of Love Live Sunshine in a magical girl fantasy world with Yoshiko as the main character.

I'm so super down for this. Let the era of Yohane commence!

I'm probably gonna get shit for this post, but is anyone else a dub only watcher?

I started as a dub only until that position became untenable, and now I can't go back to dubs, even in video games.

I've come to realize something just gets lost in the translation.

I'll make exceptions though. When I get to Ghost Stories, you best believe I'll be watching the dub.

sometimes I just feel like the dub versions don’t know how to match the emotion used in some of the wording. I’m not going to hate but that’s why I prefer sub.

See my feelings are the exact opposite and I feel like the dub holds more emotion for me personally. I do still watch some subbed stuff like series that have no chance of ever getting dubbed or I'll watch Studio Ghibli movies subbed sometimes, but I just vastly prefer and usually stick to dubs.

Also thank you both for not hating on me. It's so controversial in some places to admit that. hahaha

oh no I feel like the studio ghibli movies were actually really good at conveying that emotion. I wish I could bring out examples of some current anime where I just feel like they don’t match up to the sub version.

Well if you think of anything, please let me know. I try to download dual audio for everything for my plex account, so I'm definitely open to checking out sub versions if you highly recommend anything

I agree with the whole "doesn't always convey the emotion properly" take on things, and beyond that, I realized I just really like hearing Japanese. I dunno how to properly express that feeling, but there it is.

That being said, there are some English voices that I will always associate with certain characters, like the cast of Date A Live. Or, to go back to Love Live, Yoshiko's English voice is perfect.

And some English dubs do, I think, elevate the source material. Hensuki, already a very unhinged and raunchy romantic comedy, has a dub where the cast clearly had a lot of fun with the material. "What even is my life right now?"

Only a few dubs are decent. Cowboy Bebop is the obvious answer. And I’ll always associate Death Note with the dub. But most regularly use that vocal inflection that is just so fucking annoying, I don’t get it. And maybe the Japanese voice actors are doing the same, but it’s way harder to tell since I don’t speak it, so it doesn’t bother me

Goku’s english VA is so much more fitting than that old Japanese lady tho. Same with Sanji’s

The new SpyxFamily is great as usual. Them playing spies in the city killed me. Bring on cour two!

I can go either way a lot of the time when it comes to subs and dubs. I don't have any trouble reading the subtitles and paying attention to what's going on, but a fair amount of the time I'm lazy and don't feel like reading.

I’m trying Kaguya again and episode three has me hooked. Her getting “the talk” killed me. And when he gave her a ride to school on his bike was nice. Excited to watch more later.
